On the evening of Thursday, July 11, New Rockford’s downtown was abuzz with activity. First the tables arrived, courtesy of the Community Ambulance Service of New Rockford. Then vendors started to occupy Centennial (Gazebo) Park, and storefronts moved out onto the sidewalk. Without delay, market-goers filled parking spots and flooded the market. From the Transcript office downtown, it was quite a sight. “There are a lot of people out there,” I remember saying to no one in particular. “I don’t think I recognize anyone.” It was truly impressive...

Speculation on the 2020 gubernatorial race has already begun and, for the incumbent, it looks more like a walk. There is no use in making a charade out of the whole thing so let’s put the political circles at ease by making an iron-clad prognostication: Governor Doug Burgum will be the Republican candidate, but the sacrificial Democrat has yet to be found. First of all, I am amazed that Burgum survived this first term let alone look for a second. This guy is a mover and a shaker and the North D...
I feared that the upcoming 50th anniversary of the first manned moon landing might get eclipsed by other celebrations (the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the 10th anniversary of financier Jeffrey Epstein's latest girlfriend learning to tie her shoes, etc.), but apparently the sky is the limit for Apollo 11 remembrances. And why not? This milestone offers something for everyone. Those of us with enough gray hairs and wrinkles to remember the moon landing...
New Rockford and area folks extend sympathy to the family of Ross Watson. Visitors this past week at the Lillian Gedrose home were Doris Wolsky, Cheryl Roundy, Beatrice Hoyt and Janine Anderson. Leo and Janet Laube enjoyed a Sunday phone call from Don and Janice Guilbault of Yuma, Ariz. The Guilbaults are doing fine although Don had spent some time in the hospital but is home, happy and fine. Taylor and Amanda Koepplin enjoyed fishing on Devils Lake Sunday. They shared their catch with Aunt Charlotte Koepplin dropping of some fresh fillets....
Apparently the North Dakota Congressional Delegation has joined the 'change the name or tear it down' crowd with a proposal to change the name of Sully Hill National Game Preserve to White Horse Hill. It is disappointing to see our congressional delegation wasting time on this just before they leave for their six week annual vacation. Did you know this vacation first started in the early days of Washington because of the hot, sticky weather conditions? Apparently installing air conditioning in the halls of Congress in 1929 has not alleviated...
God weighs the spirit “I’m a good person.” “I do good things.” These are phrases I hear tossed around quite a bit. Especially at funerals, I frequently hear people justify why they should be able to get into heaven by stating that they ‘are good people’ or that the deceased was ‘a good person.’ It seems that it is natural that when we are faced with whether or not we are ‘good’ people, we can’t help but judge by what we think. The measuring stick, by which we determine whether or not we’re going to make it into heaven, is apparently in...
In this second installment, meet three more new faces on the DPRCA stage this summer: Elijah O'Sullivan, Kellie Nolan and Sandy Pifer. Elijah O'Sullivan plays the lovable (yet sometimes overly-confident) Curly McLain. Elijah comes to New Rockford having just finished his third year at NDSU, working towards a degree in Vocal Music Education. He first found a love for music in his senior year of high school as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, and decided that pursuing music was his calling! He...
The connection that twins exhibit has long fascinated me. Our family tree has many sets of twins, and I watched with interest when one family would come to family reunions with two sets of twins. The fascination continues. . I loved hearing the stories about my mother-in-law and the extremely close relationship she shared with her identical twin sister. They were born at a time when money was very tight, to parents who already had three children. One of those children had special needs, so this...
On the morning of July 18, 1902, the following went to Carrington to sing in the Catholic choir during the 40-hour devotion: Mesdames Ben Fay, Fertig, Miller, and Messrs. Ray Hester and Dr. Charles McNamara. Andrew Ohrner returned from St. Paul, where he had an operation on the tumor on his head. [The operation was deemed “successful,” but Ohrner died of carcinoma on February 25, 1903.] Teddie Richter arrived from Oshkosh, Wis., to visit his brother A.J. Richter and family southeast of tow...
Consumers hoping a couple of recent policy proposals might lower prices for their prescription drugs may be out of luck, at least for now. Earlier this year the Trump administration had proposed a rule that would have required prescription drug manufacturers to disclose list prices for drugs advertised on TV. Drug makers would have had to tell the public the list price of a 30-day supply of any drugs covered under the Medicare and Medicaid programs that cost at least $35 a month. Some experts argued the rule would not have been very effective b...
Journey of the Highgate Mastodon July 23, 2019 — In the spring of 1890, William Regcraft found some bones while digging a ditch on his uncle’s farm, one mile from Highgate, Ontario. A hardware merchant named William Hillhouse bought the bones, and he and his uncle, John Jelly, also bought the right to continue excavating. What they found was almost an entire skeleton of an Ice-Age mastodon, relative of the modern elephant. Hillhouse and Jelly cleaned the bones and strengthened them with two layers of hot white glue. The one and only tusk, des...
