    Ken Wangen|Jul 22, 2024

I’m urging you to vote "no" this November on the ballot measure proposing the elimination of property taxes. My impetus for writing? A recent incident that clearly outlines the necessity for maintaining local control with property taxes. In the early hours of July 5, 2024, 29 rail cars carrying hazardous materials derailed and caught fire about nine miles southeast of Carrington, where I serve as fire chief. The hazardous materials, including anhydrous ammonia, posed a significant risk to people in and around Carrington and Bordulac, but our r...

  • The allure of lightning

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 22, 2024

July has been a memorable month for severe summer weather, and as I write this we are only halfway through! On July 4, mother nature declared her independence. It was an experience I will not soon forget. I watched lightning web through sky off to the northeast as I drove to Carrington that afternoon, headed for the 5 p.m. Independence Day parade. Considering the pavement on Hwy. 281 was already wet, I assumed the storm was traveling east away from town, not toward us. The weather was...

Throw in the Court’s recent ruling that presidents possess breathtaking immunity from criminal prosecution, a declaration, as Jus...

  • Sermonette: Sometimes, life is hard. Part II of II

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Jul 22, 2024

Sometimes life is hard. Last week we took a look at Jeremiah 15. In that passage, Jeremiah complains at God for how difficult his life was due to following God’s calling upon him. However, the book of Jeremiah isn’t entirely about Jeremiah. Jeremiah may have delivered the messages, but his messages endure today due to his scribe, Baruch. Baruch is very quiet through the 52 chapters of Jeremiah, but in Chapter 45, he vents his frustration at God. Just as Jeremiah was rejected by his people, Baruch was as well. He was hated by his friends and...

The fall took only 4 seconds, and no one was more surprised that he had survived than Kevin himself. You see, the bridge was completed in 1937 and since that time nearly 2,000 people are...

  • Dakota Gardener: A bee lawn in progress

    Carrie Knutson|Jul 22, 2024

Last year, I seeded a small patch of bee lawn to see how it would work in my yard. It is an out-of-the-way area tucked behind a shed and spruce tree that I don't like to mow. I wanted to try it out before I committed to converting more areas of the backyard into a bee lawn. A bee lawn combines flowering plants for pollinators with low maintenance turfgrass. Not just any flowering plants can be used for a bee lawn. The flowering plants have to be good sources of pollen and nectar for...
