  • Whirlwind geneaology trip leads Minneapolis man to Brantford farm, train depot

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 23, 2018

Jim Shetler of Minneapolis, Minn. is like so many of us. He has a desire to know from where he came, and he has conducted research into his ancestry on both his mother and father's side. However, the journey he embarked upon this spring is rather out of the ordinary- he is on a genealogy trip on steroids if you will, visiting the very places where his grandparents had been exactly 100 years ago, in 1918. Along the way, he is sharing his experiences and telling his family's story via a blog...

  • First Lutheran Church to host blood drive July 30

    Jul 23, 2018

Every 2 to 3 seconds, someone in this country needs blood, and the types most often in need are O-negative and O-positive. Only 6 percent of the population has O negative blood, but it is the universal blood type, which means that anyone can receive it. In emergency or trauma situations, when there is no time to cross-match the donor's blood with the patient's, O negative blood is the type most often used. Approximately 37 percent of the population has O positive blood, which is the next commonly transfused blood type due to its high...

  • North Dakota, it's time to replace expiring carbon monixide alarms

    Jul 23, 2018

From Fargo to Williston, North Dakotans have been protected for years, thanks to carbon monoxide (CO) protection measures put in place statewide in 2011. That year, North Dakota was among a dozen states that enacted the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC 2009), which required CO alarms in newly constructed one- and two-bedroom homes. Since then, countless lives have been saved from the dangers of this invisible, odorless and potentially fatal gas, as a majority of states have followed suit with similar legislation and code adoption....

When Bump entered the spacious reception room in Hotel Kamp, Poot was already downing his second vodka-seven, irritated because Bump kept him waiting for 45 minutes. Ordinarily, people who did that disappeared the next day. “Sorry, I was late, but we had a hard time finding Hell Sinky,” Bump explained as he mixed a tumbler of vodka and Florida orange juice. “Actually, I thought Hell Sinky was in Iceland so we got a little diverted.” “That’s Reykjavik,” Poot noted. “I know that now. • When the government knows what's best for you

    Rick Jensen|Jul 23, 2018

When government "nudges" people into new behaviors, resistance is often ugly. Eric Garner died because a Democratic governor sent the message down the line that New York was losing a billion dollars in cigarette taxes and police needed to get tough on everyone, including the guy on the corner selling "loosies." In New Jersey, the Hampton Police Department brought in millions of dollars in 18 months selling cigarettes illegally in a "sting" operation, during which no charges were filed, no arrests were made and police used proceeds to buy...

  • The Surrender Summit

    Corey Seymour|Jul 23, 2018

So—can you hear me now? Ever since President Trump stood side-by-side with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Helsinki and told the world on live television that he trusts the word of the man who directed a long-term and still-ongoing attack against the United States over the combined word of the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, the National Security Agency, Justice Department, the House Intelligence Committee, and the Senate Intelligence Committee, it’s sud...

  • Sermonette - July 23, 2018

    Rev. Natasha Woitzel-Kolles, Sheyenne Oberon Area Ministries|Jul 23, 2018

I'm deviating from what I thought I was going to write about this week. My plan was to follow the theme of the ELCA youth gathering I attended in Houston, Texas by writing about grace. However as I reflected on grace, I kept coming back to forgiveness. In essence, you have to lead by grace in order to forgive: to forgive you need grace. There is one thing I want to make very clear about forgiveness. Practicing forgiveness does not mean you should be a doormat. Bullying and domestic violence are not Biblical; Jesus does not condone violence and...

  • When praying for rain, don't forget an umbrella

    Dr. Billy Holland|Jul 23, 2018

I’ve heard the old saying that “life is not a bed of roses” for as long as I can remember. I understand what it’s trying to convey, but I’ve also thought that it would not really be all that great to lie down on a bed of sharp thorns. Nevertheless, it’s safe to say our journey will have its ups and downs and unfortunately, most of us will experience our share of hard times. Whether it’s a financial worry, a medical situation, family problems, a concern for the world, or just being discouraged fr...

  • History of New Rockford

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|Jul 23, 2018

On the evening of October 22, 1901, a prairie fire burned about twenty sections northeast of New Rockford. It destroyed around a $1,000 worth of J.W. Rager’s property eight miles east of town: one granary with over a 1,000 bushels of wheat, one barn, 500 bushels of barley, some oats and a fanning mill. The full amount was covered by the St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company. Dan Larsen lost 75 tons of hay, all his pasturage, some grain and some straw stacks. Many other farmers lost hay and f...

  • Dakota Datebook: Journey of the Highgate Mastodon

    Merry Helm|Jul 23, 2018

July 23, 2018 — In the spring of 1890, William Regcraft found some bones while digging a ditch on his uncle’s farm one mile from Highgate, Ontario. A hardware merchant named William Hillhouse bought the bones, and he and his uncle, John Jelly, also bought the right to continue excavation. What they found was almost an entire skeleton of an Ice-Age mastodon, a relative of the modern elephant. Hillhouse and Jelly cleaned the bones and strengthened them with two layers of hot white glue. The one and only tusk, described as a “perfect beaut...
