The Statewide Interoperable Radio Network (SIRN) is a topic that has dominated budget talks for local emergency organizations this year, including the Eddy County Sheriff’s Department, the New Rockford Fire Department and the Community Ambulance Service of New Rockford. Even with a large appropriation during the last legislative session intended to provide substantial cost sharing measures from the state, local entities’ budgets will be stretched, as they work together with the state to pro...

It has certainly been an exciting year when it comes to sports. We've had the NR-S basketball team competing at a state level, track and field records being broken and the SNR Black Sox taking their Babe Ruth team to state. But what if we took at a look further back in history? Better yet, what if we took a moment to be part of that history? This year, the Eddy County Museum and Historical Society is riding the wave of sports excitement by hosting a Prairie Jubilee that celebrates our...

Congresswoman Ilham Omar, a Somali-American, expressed some partisan criticism and was immediately trashed by a crowd in North Carolina with the chant “Send her back,” indicating that she had no right to be in this country. I was shocked. So unAmerican, so unChristian, I thought. But my initial conclusions were wrong. While it was still unChristian, it was actually very American. Once the Germans and Scandinavians got in, we quickly slammed the door on the Irish, Chinese, Italians, Czechs, Bul...

When I was dating my wife (and still pretending to be charming), I once suggested we grab an old blanket, purchase a generous supply of processed lunch meat and go on a picnic. In my romantic desperation, I had apparently forgotten that we live in East Texas, where being outside anytime between the months of April and December is likely to involve projectile sweating and a raging case of chiggers. Based on this experience, you can imagine my skepticism when we were invited to an outdoor "Family Fun Night" at my daughters' school on a recent...
On July 25, U.S. Attorney General William Barr ordered the Federal Bureau of Prisons to update its execution protocol and schedule five executions starting this December. Whether you support the death penalty or not – I don't because I prefer limited government and the power to kill disarmed prisoners in cold blood and with premeditation is by definition unlimited government – it's worthwhile to ask: Why? More to the point, why now? Politics, that's why. There's a presidential election next year. U.S. president Donald Trump's re-election str...
A phone scammer made a mistake when he called my mother. The young male caller pretended to be her grandson. He said he'd been arrested for fishing on an Indian reservation - unaware he was breaking the law - and needed bail money so a judge wouldn't throw him in jail. My mother's response, which I'll share in a moment, is now a classic part of family lore - but the threat that increasingly sophisticated scammers pose to elderly Americans is nothing to laugh about. In this era of smartphones,...
Freedom. Yep, that word sure sounds good, doesn't it? Of course, freedom can mean different things to different people. Here we are, in the last of the summer months, the children are still out of school and free from classes and homework, but not for long. For the most part, family vacations are over and parents will have also lost their freedom from the daily grind of work. However, we're not free from our responsibilities to our children or spouses, and others in our care. We are free to go wherever we wish, in our free time but if we are...

August 5, 2019 — In 1816, Congress passed a law that stated, “Licenses to trade with the Indians within the territorial limits of the United States shall not be granted to any but citizens of the United States unless by express direction of the President.” The law didn’t apply to the traders in the north and eastern sections of what is now North Dakota, because at that time, it belonged to Great Britain. Two years later, however, England signed a treaty with the United States that determined that all land south of the 49th parallel would n...
