A couple of large tree limbs at both Hendrickson Park and Warsing Dam also fell victims to the strong winds of that hailstorm. Eunice Throlson volunteered at the sign-in table of Vitalant Blood Drive in New Rockford last Monday. Patti Larson was one...

  • Reflecting on my time "behind the scenes"

    Lora Wobbema|Aug 5, 2024

This summer I got to work as an intern at the Transcript, and my favorite part of the job was being behind the camera. At the end of the school year our Black Sox boys made it to state baseball, which hadn't been done in 24 years. I covered the region championship and several of the state games. I remember being in the dugout on the last play of the region championship game. I was getting ready to take all of the celebration shots when one of our players turned to look at me and told me to move because they were all gonna jump over the fence...

  • Forgetting our Olympic woes

    Tom Purcell|Aug 5, 2024

Bowling didn't make the cut again. Neither will baseball and softball, ballroom dancing, pole dancing and a host of other sports be featured in the 2024 Summer Olympics games in Paris. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is picky about the sports it chooses. A sport must be widely practiced globally, draw a high level of interest among the media and public and also not pose too many cost and scheduling obstacles, such as the need to build large baseball stadiums. But in a perfect world,...

  • Biden's withdrawal: Presidential character in action

    David Adler|Aug 5, 2024

The possibilities of the Office of the Presidency, the Framers of the Constitution knew, would depend in large measure on the character of its occupant. The Presidency was constrained by the terms of the Constitution and the doctrine of checks and balances, designed to temper the vaulting ambition of future chief executives who might imitate those in European countries that aggrandized power for their own interests. But the presidency was also empowered to perform the responsibilities of the Office, which possessed the bandwidth to inspire the...

  • Sermonette: August 5, 2024

    Pastor Jeff Halvorson|Aug 5, 2024

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Wow, here we are, in the month of August already. The kids' summer ball seasons are over. The stores have had back-to-school advertisements for some time now. The college and high school football camps are open for fall practice leading up to the opening of their seasons. But, closer to home, it is the harvest season. Before we know it, the combines will be in the fields and the new crops of barley and wheat will make their way to market or in bins on the farm. Let's not forget the various farmers markets...

  • Living on Purpose: Focus on the invisible not the impossible

    Billy Holland|Aug 5, 2024

Stop for a moment and closely observe this trial you’ve been going through. When you are wounded and perplexed, it seems all you can think about is the pain, but within this raging battle ask yourself (and be honest) if you’re focusing more on the circumstance than on God who has all the answers. Ask and allow Him to heal your heart. This situation will not last forever and after a period of suffering the time will come to crawl back to your knees, stand up, dust yourself off, and try to gle...

  • Dakota Gardener: Herb your enthusiasm

    Emily How|Aug 5, 2024

Adding aroma, texture and some fun, herbs are a fantastic addition to any garden. When choosing my garden herbs, I often go through the old song, "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme" and then add my kitchen staples of basil, cilantro and mint. This year I decided to get a little experimental and bought some cinnamon basil seeds. I will admit, they were on sale and I was curious, but it has been an exciting addition to the garden. Watching the basil grow and waiting to smell the aroma was a good...
