    Nathan Price|Aug 12, 2024

In recent months, canine complaints have been on the rise in New Rockford. Loose dogs accused of harassing pets and biting residents have been seen roaming the streets of New Rockford, and city officials discussed the problem at their August meeting. Two of those dogs, both pit bulls, have been sitting in the local dog pound recently, one of which recently escaped the pound before being caught a second time. One of the pit bulls is accused of biting a New Rockford resident and another resident's...

This coming weekend, there's another opportunity for New Rockford residents to help bring back the historic Rockford Theatre. When the theatre suddenly collapsed nearly two years ago, New Rockford residents were no longer able to enjoy a good movie, delicious popcorn or the theatre's recently renovated interior. But just because there's not a theatre for the moment, doesn't mean the New Rockford community can't sit down and enjoy a great movie together. In fact, residents will get to do just...

  • Day care in Brown to expand

    Nathan Price|Aug 12, 2024

On Monday, August 5, city commissioners discussed and ultimately approved an expansion of Mindy's Clubhouse, the day care currently operating out of the Brown Memorial in New Rockford. Amanda Hegland, director of the New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation (NRABC), presented the proposal to commissioners, which allows the day care to use the building's stage. That, of course, will limit the availability of the Brown Memorial and its gym for public use, particularly for those who rent the gym...

Michael Standaert, North Dakota News Cooperative|Aug 12, 2024

Some Christian denominations are publicly or discreetly raising concerns about a rise in an ideology known as "Christian nationalism" that desires a brand of conservative Christian dominion over all aspects of American society and politics. This includes concerns from the Western North Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which met in early June in Watford City and passed a resolution encouraging congregations to study and discuss Christian nationalism. The ELCA...

  • Unexpected lessons learned

    Nicole Lee|Aug 12, 2024

I had the wonderful opportunity for the past 10 weeks to be an intern at the Foster County Independent, and here I am to tell you about the wild summer I had. I never expected the skills that I would learn and develop through the experience. I graduated from Carrington High School in 2023 and just completed my first semester of college in the spring. I am attending the University of North Dakota and pursuing a degree in forensic science. At the end of the school year, I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do with my summer vacation, but I...

  • Letter: My travel journey and trip opportunities

Teresa Tande, Professor Emerita, Lake Region State College|Aug 12, 2024

For the first six decades of my life, I was content to travel throughout the United States as opportunities arose. I was blessed with parents who both loved history, so any trek we made in the US was replete with stops at historical sites. However, traveling to Europe happened only through reading, movies and daydreaming. But in 2011, all that changed. An international student at Lake Region State College (LRSC), to whom Doug and I became quite close, shared my passion for Anne Frank. When her mom came to visit, they invited me to visit them in...

    David Adler|Aug 12, 2024

Biden’s calls for constitutional restraints on the presidency and Supreme Court steeped in irony President Joe Biden’s sweeping proposals to reform the U.S. Supreme Court and the American presidency are steeped in irony. It is not lost on the citizenry that the Court’s own acts have inspired Biden’s proposals to rein in presidential power and curb the excesses of the nation’s High Bench. The Court’s creation in Trump v. United States of absolute executive immunity from criminal prosecution for a president’s official acts stunned the nation, b...

  • Sermonette: August 12, 2024

Pastor Jeff Halvorson, Sheyenne Oberon Area Ministries|Aug 12, 2024

Peace and Grace to you from our Heavenly Father. Early in Jesus' ministry he gave one of the most profound sermons of all time. It has come to be known as the Sermon on the Mount. It is found in Chapters 5-7 of the gospel according to Matthew. Of course, all of Jesus' speeches and sermons deserve our close attention but the Sermon on the Mount usually gets the most attention. It is here that we find the Beatitudes and the Golden Rule. I've talked to some people who were surprised to find out that the Golden Rule is actually bible-based. They...

  • Living on Purpose: August 12, 2024

    Billy Holland|Aug 12, 2024

You are the caretaker of your mind I read a book years ago by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale called, “The Amazing Results of Positive Thinking” and I recommend it as an inspiration and encouragement to your spiritual life. He explains that our mind is constantly bombarded with all types of persuasions and each of us are held accountable to manage them. We have the ability to resist and ignore the negative influences that distract us or we can pray and seek the Lord for a stronger discernment and sensi...

  • Dakota Gardener: What makes daylilies special?

    Esther E. McGinnis, Horticulturist, NDSU Extension|Aug 12, 2024

Do you want to hear a deep, dark secret? I didn't use to be a fan of daylilies. This confession is sheer heresy because I now oversee one of the largest public collections of daylilies in the United States. North Dakota State University is home to the American Daylily Society Historic Daylily Collection and has approximately 2,000 cultivars. In my former ignorance, I used to think daylilies were rather pedestrian because you see them everywhere. Now, I have an incredible appreciation for them....

  • North Dakota Outdoors: August 12, 2024

Doug Leier, Biologist, North Dakota Game and Fish Department|Aug 12, 2024

Checking on ducks and pheasants in N.D. In the most basic of explanations, the lack of snow this winter and late arrival of spring rain was not as helpful for ducks but better for pheasants. But let’s take a closer look. The number of roosters heard crowing during the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s 2024 spring pheasant crowing count survey was up 37 percent statewide from last year. “This is really good news but expected, considering we had such great production last year and the mild w...
