Let’s just cut to the chase, shall we? Time and time again, arguments I’ve had about Donald Trump with his most fanatical supporters end up in the same way: Discussion begins around whatever the news of the day is—and since there’s usually a lot of news about Trump and his administration, this is an ever-changing subject. Maybe it’s the 82 documented contacts between the Trump team and Russia-linked operatives, not one of which was ever reported to the proper authorities, and all of which Tea...
Obama’s astonishing takeover of the automobile industry was accomplished through a process even more corrupt than his takeover of the health care sector. While both involved backroom deals, the auto takeover was sealed in a backroom from which both the American people and our elected officials were completely shut out. Worse, it transferred power over a huge swath of our economy - and the basic choice of what cars and trucks Americans can buy - not to Washington, D.C. but to Sacramento, California.Sacramento was empowered, contrary to f...

God and guardrails A couple of months ago, my 15-year old-daughter and I were discussing the functionality of guardrails. Around here, we don’t see them all that often, and when we do see them, they’re well off the roads, like on interstate dividers. Rarely in North Dakota do drivers get a close look at guardrails, like others states do in the mountains. Rather, as she asked how they were supposed to work, my mind actually drew on what I remembered from watching NASCAR with my family growing up. NASCAR races are filled with guardrails and cemen...

Meeting up with a high school friend not long ago brought memories back that I hadn’t thought about for a long time. My friend and I went to the same school, the same small country church and belonged to the same 4-H club. I remember the early mornings and late nights I spent on the sun porch working to get my sewing projects ready to be exhibited. I even remember some of the items I made. Even though my parents let us each raise some calves one year, I didn’t show them at the fair, but I do...
