"Took away our native tongue/And taught their English to our young..." — from "Indian Reservation," by John D. Loudermilk. According to the United Nations, there are about 6,500 distinct languages (not just dialects) spoken throughout the world. Tom Purcell|Aug 26, 2019

    Christine Flowers|Aug 26, 2019

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo was caught in a video screaming expletives when someone made the mistake of calling him "Fredo," referring to the fictional character Fredo Corleone from "The Godfather” films. Fredo is portrayed as the gentle, but dim-witted brother, incompetent in the family's business but desperate for respect from his father. Until I heard Cuomo's expletive-laden attack on a fan who wanted his autograph and, perhaps good-naturedly, used the Godfather reference, I had no idea that c...

The state legislative leadership recently announced that they were going to the people to get suggestions for the use of the interest running into the hundreds of millions generated by our $6 billion Heritage Fund. Thus far, the legislature has no consensus on the definition of “heritage” so we are not sure where the money ought to go. Consequently, they have been using it to fill the fiscal gap at the end of the legislative session. And that will be modus operandi from here to eternity if we...

You have probably heard this a thousand times already, but where has the summer gone? Wasn’t it in just the last couple of weeks I wrote an article on the kids getting out of school and people going on vacation? It sure seems like it. Now the kids are back in school, some happily and some sad. The same goes for the teachers I suspect. On the positive side, if your summer was a little on the boring side, we have the football and volleyball seasons starting for our entertainment. It will be fun to cheer them on again this year and I look f...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Aug. 26, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 26, 2019

One bright and sunny day many years ago, I stood at my living room window, watching many butterflies flitting about the colorful blossoms below. I grabbed my camera, intentionally leaving our energetic puppy in the house as I knew she could not be still enough to allow any photography. Even though I tried to be careful walking up to the garden, the butterflies didn’t really want me there. I waited quietly. It wasn’t long before those butterflies came back and I was able to capture some bea...
