Summer is officially over. On Thursday, Aug. 25, students of the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District filtered into school for the first day of classes. Though many will be busy with first day activities, some might also notice just how much "new" there is at NR-S this year. Students would have immediately noticed the school's brand new front apron, which is now ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible, and doesn't have the large cracks and potential tripping hazards of the old apron....
Earlier this year, a New Rockford couple was accused of child neglect after the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at their home on March 8. According to court documents, the search revealed less-than-ideal living conditions inside the home, as deputies discovered “dried feces on the floor throughout the house,” as well as piles of food, toys and junk. Also discovered were methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Consequently, Gregory and Danielle Holland were charged with...

Mike Brown, a native of Chamberlain, S.D., recently began work as Eddy County's latest sheriff's deputy. Brown is filling the position left open by Christopher Bittmann, who took a job with the Carrington Police Department last month. This is Brown's first position as an officer of the law, but even though he's fresh out of the academy, the 32-year-old has plenty of life experience. After his time with the Minnesota Army National Guard, which included a deployment to Iraq in 2010-11, Brown...

After a short summer, kids are headed back to school, and as their classes begin they're likely to notice a few new faces. For the next couple of weeks, the Transcript will feature those new teachers here in the paper, beginning with Nathan Jensen, Amber Fortney and Courtney Wiesz. Wiesz, a former employee here at the Transcript, will be teaching business education for high schoolers this year, and she can't wait to get started. In 2012, Wiesz earned a degree in advertising from Liberty...

Burgum, Kroshus and Headland unveiled the Relief for All plan during a Capitol press confe...

My mother made me do it! Rather, she really didn't make me, she actually taught me how to do it through lots of hard work and all the time I spent in her garden as a kid. I have and never did regret it, though, because of what followed in my life to date in the hobby of gardening. The thought of this came to mind following the story carried in this paper a couple weeks ago featuring the Community Garden Project currently underway in the city. It all started, as I remember, that Dad and I were...
"Anxious parents are no longer allowing their kids to go to slumber parties," announced a blurb in the August 16 "New York Post." Slumber parties are not usually one of the top subjects on my mind in the morning ("Got my keys, got my snack, got my wallet, got a great 'is your refrigerator running?' joke to share..."), so I was surprised to learn that 12.3 million parents participate in the #NoSleepovers movement online. (Boy, I'm old. I remember when Arte Johnson popularized "Blow in my ear and...
In a blockbuster, landmark ruling that rolled back the tides of racism and White Supremacy, the Supreme Court, in Loving v. Virginia (1967), affirmed marriage as a fundamental right protected by the 14th Amendment when it struck down a state law that banned interracial marriage. Just a dozen years after the Court had held in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional and, in a historical context in which racial violence and southern resistance to civil rights laws and rulings captured daily headli...
Quality early experiences for children begin with a qualified, trained and consistent early childhood workforce. To support this key priority, the North Dakota Department of Human Services is offering stipends to help retain and reward early childhood professionals for their work caring for children, along with incentives to reward individuals for completing approved training and education milestones. Individuals who work directly with children in licensed child care settings can apply now for a career pathway incentive, workforce training...
Greetings dear friends in Christ. I think that for many, if not most, August is not a month where we look both backward and forward. January 1, New Year's Day would seem more appropriate for that kind of thing. With the beginning of a new year, we think of resolutions to make and eventually break. After all, nobody actually keeps a New Year's resolution. Maybe, as individuals we might use a birthday or anniversary as a time of reflection. But August? The end of August? Why would we choose now for that type of thinking? I'm thinking it is a grea...
God has been stirring me for the last several years to realize there are many levels in our relationship with Him and that we are to be continually progressing through the stations of the tabernacle on our way to the holy of holies. He desires to give everyone a personal revelation to become more spiritually sensitive, to hear His voice, along with His wisdom to know what is right and wrong. To develop an awareness of His presence, we must invest our time meditating on His word, praying, and int...
I've completed nearly 20 years at NDSU as the Extension forester and I've seen a lot of the state (and its trees and forests) in that time. I sometimes wonder how many miles I've driven through the years. Numbers fascinate me. They can offer a clear understanding of a situation. For example, we could say that trees had great growth in 2022. My question would be, "How great is great"? What one person considers great, another person might consider to be average. Putting a number to that claim of...
On April 20, 1905, Herbert Treffry returned from his winter “down east.” He had been very sick for two months. Jacob Adam came in from the Kiner area northwest of town on business and to visit. Mrs. R. Zimmerman returned to her home in Black Duck, Minnesota, her visit with her aunt Mrs. Marcus Medved cut short by a telegram telling her of the serious illness of her mother. That evening, a 10-lb. son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lyman. On April 20 and 21, Joe Trainor of Velva was in town vis...

Worrywart Daughter Dear Worrywart, There are actually several different types of check-in services, along with some simple technology devices that can help keep your mom be safe at home while providing you some peace of mind. Here are some top options to look into....
On Friday, Aug. 19, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets kicked off their 2022 season against the Nelson County Chargers in McVille. Last season, the Chargers went undefeated in the regular season and extinguished any hopes NR-S had of becoming region 3 champions. For that reason, in addition to the Rockets' lack of upperclassman this year, the Chargers were favorites entering Friday's matchup. Unfortunately for NR-S, it showed. The Rockets' attempted to establish a run game early, but it soon beca...
Excitement is building for the upcoming hunting seasons, from archery deer and grouse just around the corner, to pheasant opener and the firearms big game seasons starting later in the autumn, and anticipation grows for these fall events that cannot be contained by the four lines which bound their square on the calendar. Undoubtedly, much planning has gone into each of them already, as phone calls exchanged by friends setting up traditional morning-of meetings and sweaty summer evenings at the...

I'm a fan of numbers and statistics to a point where they fascinate me. Not just what the numbers say but how the numbers are generated. When I took my college statistics course, I knew going in I was about to experience a learning curve in the most real time. Thankfully, the professor weighed the statistics with a human element beyond actual scores, teaching us firsthand how attendance and hitting deadlines contributed to our grades. What I took from this was the importance of how the numbers...
