Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is reminding farmers that assistance is available for blackbird damage to crops through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Wildlife Services program. “Blackbirds cause millions of dollars in losses annually to sunflower and grain crops in North Dakota,” Goehring said. “Wildlife Services provides integrated blackbird damage management by loaning nonlethal management equipment to farmers and assisting with blackbird dispersal from sunflower fields...
The City of Sheyenne received a $10,000 donation from the New Rockford Eagles earmarked for boiler repairs at the former Sheyenne School building, which houses the Open Season Lodge and Event Center. This contribution from the Eagles, paired with the generosity of the community puts the Open Season Lodge very close to meeting their $25,000 goal for the boiler repair project. As always, the community was generous in their support of the lodge, through their private donations and attendance at...
The 2019 North Dakota hunting seasons have officially been open since Aug. 15 when the early Canada goose management take began. In fact, depending on the Canada goose zone in which you hunt, the first early season closure is Sept. 7 in the Missouri River zone. The other Canada goose zone closures are Sept. 15 in the western zone and Sept. 20 in the eastern zone. But this column is more about openings than closures. We’re in that time of year when many weekends through early November have so...
Big game hunters are reminded of requirements for transporting deer, elk and moose carcasses and carcass parts into and within North Dakota, as a precaution against the possible spread of chronic wasting disease. Hunters are prohibited from transporting into or within North Dakota the whole carcass of deer, elk, moose or other members of the cervid family from states and provinces with documented occurrences of CWD in wild populations, or in captive cervids. In addition, hunters harvesting a white-tailed deer or mule deer from deer hunting...

I was just a baby when I first met Josolyn Collier of Shear Delight Salon in New Rockford. She was the first person and is among the few to ever cut my hair. I had long, brown wavy hair, and my mom loved it. It was my dad who took me in to get my first haircut. He was lucky that Josolyn knew just the right amount of hair to cut in order to keep everyone happy. Hair is funny. It's always growing. This summer, I talked to my mom into letting me sport my first buzz cut. I think it was hard for her...

There's hope for price competition in healthcare, but so far only with companies that self-insure and pay for all employee's medical costs. I do my part by advocating price transparency for hospitals to create competition and put downward pressure on insurance rates. Simply require hospitals that accept federal money to post binding prices for the 25 most common in-patient surgeries; the 25 most common outpatient procedures and the 25 most common tests. These turnkey charges must also match the...
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! Just think, this spring we will open a new decade in education! Things are so different from when I started elementary school, almost 50 years ago. I attended a small, rural elementary school. My principal was one of my dad’s best friends. His son and my dad had both served in the military overseas, my dad came home to farm, his son didn’t make it back. Most of the families farmed potatoes, onions and some contracted sweet corn with a local canning company. A large processing co-op in town provided first rat...
By holding this newspaper in your hands you're supporting democracy. Democracy doesn't work without an informed citizenry and informed votes. It's easy to overlook what a newspaper brings to a community, but thousands of communities across the country have discovered that when it's gone, the cost is high. A study by Paul Gao, an associate professor of finance at the University of Notre Dame, and others, found that there is a direct and devastating correlation to the costs borne by taxpayers in communities that lose their public watchdog. A...
Tom Burton and Peggy O'Neill, the world's most devoted couple, were killed in a car accident on July 19, 2019. They were an adored couple and were actively involved as an aunt and uncle to their dozens of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, never missing a family event. Tom and Peggy valued their family above all else. Married for 19 years and together for 15 years before that, the love they felt for one another was inspiring, and they were rarely apart. Their favorite moments were sitting around a table with their loved ones, and...
As I reflected on Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16, one of our assigned readings for Sunday, Sept. 1, I noticed that the writer of this letter (or sermon?) was nearing the end of the message. It’s no secret that last words have real power, so it was often the case in this type of communication for a writer (or speaker) to begin exhorting the readers (hearers) to live in the proper ways in response to what was written (spoken) earlier in the message. The writer of Hebrews is no different. The author exhorted, urged, charged the listeners to a style of l...

On Aug. 21, 1902, James Hobbs was in on business from eastern Eddy County. Oscar Bauer returned from his trip “up the line”; he had resigned as the manager of the Monarch Elevator in order to buy grain on the Soo Line that fall. R.M. Kennedy replaced Bauer as manager on Aug. 25. Oscar Irwin left for his old home, Mayville, N.Y. Mrs. F.E. Diemer returned to Barnesville, Minn., after visiting her parents, the Stoddards. Recently a number of residents had purchased parrots and canaries; on that day a traveling salesman brought the birds to New...

Dear Savvy Senior, What do I need to do to get Social Security disability benefits? Sept. 3, 2019 — More than 150 years ago, a man named Sam Brown wrote to his father, “I hope you will not believe all that is said of ‘Sully’s Successful Expedition,’ against the Sioux. I don’t think he aught to brag of it at all, because it was, what no decent man would have done, he pitched into their camp and just slaughtered them, worse a great deal than what Indians did in 1862, he killed very few men and took no hostile ones prisoners… and now he returns saying that we need fear no more, for he has ‘wiped out all hostile Indians from Dakot...
North Dakota recently became the first state in the nation to receive a federal waiver designed to help consumers by reducing wait times for real estate appraisals. The North Dakota Department of Financial Institutions (DFI), North Dakota Bankers Association and Gov. Doug Burgum requested the waiver, seeking temporary relief for consumers as the state experiences a shortage of credentialed appraisers. The Appraisal Subcommittee of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) has temporarily waived the credentialing...
Just where do those little fruit flies come from anyway? It seems like there aren’t any in the house but when those bananas ripen, there they are and they are so irritating. The other day I noticed them in the fruit bowl as I walked by, on my way to work. Since I didn’t want the flies in the house, I grabbed a cover that could keep them inside the bowl, headed out the door and tossed the bananas under the rose bushes. I’ve been trying to bury our banana peels under the rose bushes after I read...
