  • Eyes that see the good in things: Sept 9, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Sep 9, 2019

The harvest season makes me think about the coming holiday season. This year is no exception. The other day I was remembering one holiday season, not so long ago, when I was really lonesome for some special family members. My sister and mother-in-law had both died that year, and I was not feeling overly thankful as I was making Thanksgiving preparations. I was dreading the Christmas season even more. I sat in the chair, paging through cookbooks, trying to decide what to make for Thanksgiving...

  • Rockets blast Bearcats

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 9, 2019

The traditional team walk across the railroad tracks to Jim Johnson Field set the scene for a phenomenally-successful home opener for the NR-S Rocket football team in 2019. The Rockets scored 66 first half points, and took off the gas in the second half while the defense did the rest of the work in recording a 74-0 shutout over the North Star Bearcats Friday night, August 30. Statistical comparisons went all NR-S' way, outgaining North Star by an eye-popping 436-11 margin in total yardage. Much...

  • Thunder strikes Rockets in roller coaster five-set match

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 9, 2019

Sara Myhre's first match at the head of the NR-S Rockets was certainly a memorable one, even if the end result wasn't in her team's favor. NR-S took the first two sets against non-region foe Medina-Pingree-Buchanan, but the Thunder rallied back from the brink of defeat to take the next three and shock the Rockets at the NR-S Gym, 21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-11 and 15-12. It was the season opener for both teams. Each team went point-for-point in the first set, and were knotted at 20-20 before the...

NR-S' cross country team had several quick trips around state golf courses in the past week's worth of meets, competing in Northwood on Aug. 29 and at the Carrington Invitational at CrossRoads Golf Course this past Tuesday, Sept. 3. In Northwood, the Rockets had four top-25 times in their various divisions, led by junior varsity girls' competitor Katie Allmaras in eighth place out of 44 runners in 14:09 for the 3,000-kilometer race. Teammate Kaiya O'Connor took home 21st in the JV race as well...

Deer Season for Young Hunters Opens Sept. 13 Friday, Sept. 13 at noon Central Time signals the start of a nine-and-a-half-day deer hunting season for youth. Hunters are reminded that a 2019 general game and habitat license must be purchased before the state Game and Fish Department will mail the youth deer license. Hunters are encouraged to purchase the required license early, since it takes a couple of days to receive the deer license in the mail. Licensed residents who turn age 11, 12 or 13 in 2019 are allowed to hunt statewide, but only for...

    Doug Leier, N.D. Game & Fish Dept.|Sep 9, 2019

The discovery of chronic wasting disease in deer in North Dakota 10 years ago was an unfortunate milestone. The disease is fatal to deer, elk, and moose and can lead to reduced populations if left unchecked. While there is no treatment, vaccine or feasible way to eliminate CWD. The state Game and Fish Department has implemented regulations over subsequent years that are designed to minimize the spread of the disease within the state. In addition to carcass transportation restrictions from three...
