  • Too many people shunned by loved ones over politics

    Christine Flowers|Sep 9, 2024

As I watched the Kennedy siblings close ranks against Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. because of his support for Donald Trump, it reminded me of the fragility of human bonds. Over the past eight years, since Trump burst onto the political scene, I've witnessed the crumbling of so many relationships, including marriages and childhood friendships, based upon an absolute inability to deal with difference and dissent. I know very few conservatives who have disowned liberal friends. The opposite is far more c...

  • Protecting citizen's right to know

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 9, 2024

In the world of public notices, this summer has been a doozy. Recent events, some involving celebrities, have shed light on just how well read public notices are. Public notices are reports of upcoming meetings held by government entities, notices to creditors when a person passes away, foreclosure notices issued by banks, and financial reports of the cities and school districts, to name a few. Each state has laws that govern what is considered a public notice and how often each needs to be...

  • Judicial accountability when Congress is reluctant to use impeachment power

    David Adler|Sep 9, 2024

The doctrine of checks and balances, central to the success of American Constitutionalism, is designed to curb abuse of power and promote governmental accountability. But the Constitution is not a machine that will run without good men and women at the helm. When those in positions of authority and responsibility are reluctant to turn the wheels of checks and balances to constrain the judiciary, for example, there is little to deter misbehavior. Justice James Iredell, a member of the first Supreme Court and one of the most penetrating thinkers...

  • Park District Happenings: September 9, 2024

    Macey Wobbema|Sep 9, 2024

Days are starting to get shorter, baseball is over, and the pool is closed for the season. This can only mean one thing – fall is here! I realize how difficult and frustrating this summer was for not only us, but the community as well with a very wet and rainy baseball season, and getting the pool up and running so late into the season. So, I just want to say thank you so much for the incredible amount of patience everyone had with me as I learned and adjusted to this job. I am extremely grateful to the board for taking the gamble on me, as I w...

  • Sermonette: John 3:16

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Sep 9, 2024

Some time ago, the New Rockford Evangelical Free Church was working its way through the gospel of John. Eventually, we arrived at arguably the most famous verse of the Bible: John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 NIV In my experience, this verse is the most memorized and well-known verse of 21st century American Christianity. From camp, to Sunday School, to bible studies, it seems everybody who has ever been in a church has thi...

After dominating the St. John Woodchucks 69-0 in their season opener, NR-S/M was back on the road on Friday, Aug. 30 to face off with Cavalier, an opponent...

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|Sep 9, 2024

On March 21 and 22, 1907, Adolph Wilson of Balfour was down on business. The March 22, 1907, “Transcript” reprinted a news item that George Fugina had brought with him from Osseo, Wisc. The item was purportedly from a resident of Portal, N.D., to her father in New York State and painted the winter conditions in North Dakota: blizzard after blizzard, temperatures of minus 52, intermittent train service causing a lack of food and fuel, cattle starving and people freezing to death nearly every day...

  • Dakota Gardener: Emerald Ash Borer: the waiting is over

    Joe Zeleznik|Sep 9, 2024

I moved to North Dakota in September of 2002. During my last week in East Lansing, Michigan, I was having a drink with a colleague who's a forest entomologist. She had been on a conference call all afternoon, where they were discussing a new insect that they had just identified in the Detroit area. They called it emerald ash borer (EAB). My friend said, "It's going to be a bad one." Here we are, 22 years later, and the insect has finally been confirmed in North Dakota in rural LaMoure County....
