  • Fact or Fiction: Sept. 16, 2024

    Nathan Price|Sep 16, 2024

Every day, blatant lies are told by politicians, spread on social media and retold by so-called “news” networks – and too often these lies go unchecked. Arguably, this has led to Americans in 2024 being the most purposefully misled population in U.S. history. After all, it’s impossible to know every relevant fact off the top of our heads, meanwhile the age of social media has made it easier than ever to spread lies. So, in an effort to combat this epidemic of misinformation, here is a list of...

  • Smart parents can prevent school shootings

    Michael Reagan|Sep 16, 2024

“He was on our radar.” How many times have we heard that after a mass shooting at a high school or a shopping mall? We heard it for the umpteenth time again this week after a disturbed 14-year-old kid in Georgia took a rifle to school and killed two students, two teachers, and injured nine others. “He was on our watch list,” the local police said to no one’s surprise. A year ago, after the FBI’s radar picked up Colt Gray reportedly making threats online that he was going to “shoot up a middle sc...

  • Compelling reasons to impose term limits on U.S. Supreme Court justices

    David Adler|Sep 16, 2024

Plummeting public approval of the U.S. Supreme Court, now at record lows, reflects in part deep-seated concerns about recent rulings that have overturned precedents that protected fundamental rights, as well as an unprecedented ruling – the creation of presidential immunity from criminal prosecution – without foundation in our constitutional architecture. It is also true that the diminished confidence of the citizenry in the nation’s highest bench is a function of the ethical lapses of some current justices. These factors, among others, have ac...

  • Sermonette: Hunting Dogs

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Sep 16, 2024

I love dogs. Someone doesn’t have to spend much time around me to realize that not only am I a dog person as opposed to a cat person, but I simply enjoy being around dogs. I’ve appreciated just about every dog I’ve ever met. I prefer big, furry hunting dogs, but little dogs are amusing to me also. A few years ago, I had a 50 lb coonhound/terrier cross named Ed. He looked quite a bit like a skinny Labrador retriever, but relates to people completely differently. I found this out when I was training him as a puppy. See, Ed proved to be difficult...

  • Dakota Gardener: Divide and conquer your garden

    Emily How|Sep 16, 2024

"You'll never guess what I found behind the shed ... another peony," I shouted to my husband. This makes the tenth peony we have found in a random location around our backyard. Considering the peony is growing right next to my compost bin, I am not planning on keeping it there. Add that to the lilies I found along the fence line, the iris in the middle of the yard and the surprise tulips that popped up this spring in the front of the house, I have enough flowers to fill in some of the bare...
