  • Legislature's hostility to ethics proves the polls

    LLoyd Omdahl|Sep 23, 2019

EMC Research of Washington, D.C. conducted polls to assess the voters’ perceptions of the state legislature and political system. The results should have jerked legislators up short but they seemed determined to make the Ethics Commission unworkable. They succeeded. In the polls, the legislature had only a 39 percent approval rating. More than 80 percent believed political leader...

  • Sermonette: Sept. 23, 2019

Rev. Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church|Sep 23, 2019

As I consider 1 Timothy 2:1-7, our New Testament reading for Sunday, Sept. 22, I’m struck by Paul’s assertion in verse 4 that God “desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” The explicit inclusiveness of Paul’s assertion here leaps off the page. Whether it is directed against the restricted salvation offered by false teachers or even against Jewish claims to exclusivity, both the being saved by God and “the knowledge of the truth” are available to all, not just a select few. In verses 5 and 6, Paul then stresses...

  • Dakota Datebook: Bungled Train Robbery

    Merry Helm|Sep 23, 2019

Sept. 27, 2019 — This date in 1897 was an inglorious day for a young group of would-be train robbers. The previous night at about midnight, westbound Train No. 1 was late in arriving in Fargo. The Bismarck Tribune reported: “The delay was due to the special request of a number of highwaymen and was unavoidable under the circumstances, as the highwaymen were temporarily masters of the situation. It was a surprising event, considering the locality, as it has always been supposed that the holdup line was a good deal farther west.” Engineer Hooke...
