    Nathan Price|Sep 23, 2024

This November, voters will decide whether to eliminate valuation-based property taxes in the state of North Dakota. The issue will appear on November ballots as Measure 4, which would specifically prohibit all political subdivisions in North Dakota – such as counties, school districts and cities – from collecting tax based on the assessed value of property. The measure was placed on the ballot after a petition gathered enough signatures to qualify, and now its proponents and opponents are cri...

This time it's a little different, though. Hello, I'm back giving Talk of the Town another try. I'm combining Talk of the Town and Pleasant Prairie into one due to the lack of news. Folks were just not getting me their news or family happenings. I have been asked, "why no Talk of the Town?" That tells me there is still some interest, especially to folks who subscribe to the paper out of town or state. So, if you still want Talk of the Town, please call me at (701) 947-2986 at your convenience. We'll see what happens. Okay? Monday found Jimmy Indergaard a visitor and supper guest at the...

  • Letter to the editor: End unfair property tax

    Rick Becker|Sep 23, 2024

Measure 4 provides huge property tax relief to everyone, completely reforms how cities and counties will tax in the future, and is a tremendous opportunity for all North Dakotans. It does this while ensuring full local control, and not a single dollar of funding is lost. Dr. Arthur Laffer is a world-renowned economist who advised both President Ronald Reagan and President Trump on their famous tax cut programs. He has reviewed Measure 4, and believes it is a great opportunity for the people of North Dakota. In a letter to the committee dated...

  • Letter to the Editor: Utke explains opposition

    David Utke|Sep 23, 2024

I am personally opposed to Measure 4. I don't think that it is a good solution for our residents. First of all, it is an incomplete package. Widespread concern about real estate taxes is real, but this measure does not specify how this revenue would be replaced. I don't think our residents want to see drastic cuts to services, so another method would be needed to replace the lost revenue. This would still have to come from North Dakota residents, directly or indirectly. $1.575 billion would be needed annually for our state, counties, cities,...

    Michael Howe, N.D. Secretary of State|Sep 23, 2024

We hear it every two years – "This is the most important election of our lifetime!" In a sense, it is true. Not because of who the candidates may be or the issues facing voters, but because the most important election of our lifetime is always the "next election." Voting is a privilege that every United States citizen has and a responsibility every eligible voter should take seriously. You are responsible for choosing your leaders, your policies, and your future, no matter if it is a P...

  • Term limits for justices: regularizing appointments and lowering the political temperature

    David Adler|Sep 23, 2024

Advocates of term limits for Supreme Court justices, mindful of the overgrown, transformative power of the Court and the ethical lapses of some of its members, have recommended staggered, 18-year terms and regularized presidential appointments for justices as a means of reducing the heated and divisive partisanship that has raised the confirmation process to a fever pitch and undercut public confidence in the judiciary, what Alexander Hamilton called, “the least dangerous branch.” Integral to these proposals is the guarantee that each pre...

  • Sermonette: Historical present tense

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Sep 23, 2024

Some time ago, as a I prepared an Easter sermon, I learned something new. Well, to be fair to my college professors, I actually relearned something that I had forgotten since my college days. As I worked through John 20, I realized that there were funny notations connected with many of the verbs in the chapter. I looked into it, and discovered that this was the translator’s way of conveying that while the verbs translate accurately into the English past tense, in the Greek they are actually in a rare tense called "historical present tense." T...

However, the Rockets began to jive better during this game than the previous games. The Tommies took all three sets, but the Rockets didn't give them easy wins in the second and third, as they were only 2-3 points down each time. Nathan Price|Sep 23, 2024

Now five games into their 2024 campaign, the No. 2 New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock Rockets still haven't experienced a competitive game. On Friday, Sept. 20, the undefeated Rockets took on the 3-1 Four Winds Indians in Fort Totten for their second inter-region matchup of the season. And, as per usual, it didn't take long for NR-S/M to assert their superiority. The Indians started the game with possession, but with the Rockets' defense bearing down that first drive was over quickly, amounting to a...
