  • Ole gets 300 years in clean machine

    LLoyd Omdahl|Sep 30, 2019

Ole Thornerson was wheezing and snorting as he stumbled up the last golden step to Pearly Gate 333. He expected a huge crowd of friends and relatives cheering him for making it but he was faced with only an 8-foot table from Walmart at which were seated a trio of saints– St. Peter, presiding, flanked by Saints James and John. James and John were not Peter’s first choices for deputies of registration but their mother had put up such a stink about good appointments for her two boys that Peter fig...

  • Football cliches and the Democratic Primary

    Will Durst|Sep 30, 2019

Got an embarrassing admission here. I was scheduled to summarize the Democratic candidates’ debate last week, but also had a deadline about the opening of the football season, and they kind of got mixed up together. Don't you hate it when two things vie for your attention at the same time? Must be what's making Donald Trump so irascible. Of course, when you get right down to it, the two do have quite a bit in common. Both politics and football are sports that don't finish until there's blood on the field. You cannot comment on either one w...

  • Remembering loved ones lost during Suicide Awareness Month

    Christine Flowers|Sep 30, 2019

I never met my great-grandfather, although I've seen pictures of him. The one I treasure most is a family photo, similar to those images on an Ancestry.com commercial, where he is sitting with his wife and older daughters. (The sons would arrive later.) He's wearing a hat and a solemn expression, but you get the impression that he's content with the life he'd created since emigrating from Italy a few years before. You would be wrong, though. Some years after that photo was taken, this patriarch...

  • 1. Make Lists 2. Read Lists 3. Make More Lists

    Peter Funt|Sep 30, 2019

Here are my five favorite things about this sentence: (1) It grabs your attention, (2) It keeps you guessing, (3) It's not overly wordy, (4) It's something you might forward to friends, (5) It's part of the list-making trend that just keeps growing. The New York Times sent subscribers an email on August 11 promoting "12 new books our editors liked" and "10 best new recipes." There was also a report on "the 50 best TV shows on Netflix right now." 50! That's quite a list. I expect a follow-up in...

  • Sermonette: Sept. 30, 2019

Rev. Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church New Rockford|Sep 30, 2019

by Rev. Doug Nemitz First Lutheran Church New Rockford   When I think about our New Testament reading for Sunday, Sept. 29 (1 Timothy 6:6-19), and the ever widening gap between the wealthiest Americans and the poorest, it seems to me that the Christian faith always lives in uneasy tension with wealth. On the one hand, we who follow Jesus recognize that wealth could be seen as a genuine gift from God to be used to bless others. On the other hand, as Jesus recognized in preaching so much about the dangers of wealth, it can be a devious tem...
