  • 4-H to upgrade facilities

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 7, 2019

The Eddy County 4-H program is ready for a renaissance. Over the past 10 years, two of the program's four facilities have been torn down, and its membership has dropped considerably. As far as NDSU Extension Agent Donna Anderson and the Eddy County 4-H Council are concerned, that trend ends now. This summer they embarked on a capital improvement plan, first by engaging Weisenburger Construction to pour a concrete floor for the 4-H auction barn at the Eddy County Fairgrounds. Then, using the hole...

The Eddy County Commission has decided to hire a full-time extension agent. Former NDSU Extension Agent Tim Becker opted to participate in the college’s voluntary separation incentive program and leave his position as of May 15. However, the commission hired Becker part-time to assist during the summer to ensure that the 4-H program and Steam Threshers event would have coverage. Now commissioners say it’s time to move on. ”I think a county agent is critical to our organization, our farming commu...

  • What it takes: Teaching is an art

    Oakley Brazil|Oct 7, 2019

This month I want to introduce readers to Mrs. Erin Radke, the new art teacher at New Rockford-Sheyenne School. This is a job that she has wanted to do since she was five years old and she couldn't be happier. "I'm living the dream!" she says. Originally from Springdale, Ark., Mrs. Radke says that one reason she moved to North Dakota was because she LOVES snow. She now lives in Carrington with her husband Marc Radke, but she will be moving to New Rockford this fall. Mrs. Radke believes that...

  • Mother Nature is proving to be a cruel partner

Paul DuBourt, Natural Resource Conservation Service|Oct 7, 2019

Most all of us have had experiences with challenging weather. These past couple weeks have not disappointed in showing us who really is in charge! I’m going to bring a different perspective to this situation we find ourselves in. When we encountered excessively wet fall conditions, those same saturated soil conditions carried over to a challenging spring in most instances. Our soil is similar to a cup, it only holds so much and anything more is excess saturation– A MESS!!! What we didn’t realize then was that we had a great opportunity to ge...

October is “Stamp Out Stigma” month being sponsored by the Association of Behavioral Health and Wellness (ABHW) to reduce the public stigma of mental illness and disorders caused by substance abuse. • Make this a beautiful day in your neighborhood

    Tom Purcell|Oct 7, 2019

Tom Hanks is right: We should be allowed to start off our days feeling good. Hanks stars as Fred "Mister" Rogers in the movie "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," opening Nov. 22. At a press conference after its world premiere at a film festival in Toronto, reports “Deadline,” Hanks called Rogers' life an antidote to our cynical times: "Cynicism has become the default position for so much of daily structure and daily intercourse. Why? Because it's easy and there's good money to be made at it....

  • Politicians: A necessary demystification

    Thomas Knapp|Oct 7, 2019

Politicians are people with jobs and with bosses. On its face that seems like a relatively uncontroversial statement, but I'm always surprised at how much time people spend looking for high principle in the decisions politicians make instead of considering the mundane dynamics of political employment. In a recent column, I pointed out that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) finally opened a formal impeachment inquiry versus President Donald Trump because she's good at counting votes, not because she's personally keen on the idea. Pelosi wants to keep...

  • Do you aspire to be a fly on the wall?

    Danny Tyree|Oct 7, 2019

What can you say about the eavesdropper wannabes who sigh, "I wish I could be a fly on the wall for that conversation"? Why is becoming a disease-spreading insect their "go to" position for spying? Why isn't their first impulse to daydream about invisibility, superhuman hearing or a microphone hidden in a rhododendron arrangement? Do they crave a compound-eye view of their boss conversing with the company narc? Do they have a fetish for rubbing their legs together and dodging spider webs? I've...

  • Living on Purpose: Encouragement for the soul

    Dr. Billy Holland|Oct 7, 2019

I was talking with a Christian brother the other day about how it seems that many people are living in sadness and discouragement when suddenly he made a comment that really caused me to think. He said that according to his studies about the Christian life, it seems to be impossible to be depressed and to walk in the joy of God’s presence at the same time. After our conversation, I continued to ponder this statement and by the way, I do agree with it. I’m not saying that developing an opt...

  • Sermonette: Oct. 7, 2019

    Mindy Meier, First Congregational Church|Oct 7, 2019

Genesis 2:15,18,19: The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. Our work, how we spend our days (whether we get paid for it or not) is our calling in life, and each and eve...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Oct. 7, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Oct 7, 2019

The cooling temperatures of autumn bely the rising temperatures of the political world these days. It seems inconceivable that the political temperatures will cool any time soon, especially as we move toward another presidential election. As the political parties seem to polarize into more extreme views, personal relationships continue to suffer. I’ve read articles this week that tell the stories of friends and family members who are no longer speaking to each other because they disagree a...
