Who fares better in the snow- Rockets or Tornadoes? Well, if the football game between the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Cavalier Tornadoes on Friday, Oct. 5 was any indication, it's an intense battle of wills. Snow fell overnight on Thursday, covering the Rockets' playing field on Friday morning. Volunteers cleaned off the field the best they could to prepare for the big game, as it was Homecoming, senior night and the last contest of the regular season all at the same time. The new...
Because Siri informs me that only 1.2 percent of people in the United States have earned a doctorate or Ph.D. degree, it is even more extraordinary that precisely 30.76 percent of the Sheyenne Class of 1960 holds this distinction. Yes, four of the 13 graduates in that class obtained not only their undergraduate and master's degrees, but also, in various fields, doctoral degrees, the highest college education to which one can aspire. The four are Duane Berglund, Allan Garnaas, Donald (Don)...
The New Rockford-Sheyenne Board of Education convened at a regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 8. Much of the conversation was in regard to the grounds and facilities. Now that the renovation project is waning, the focus returned to other facility needs such as the playground. In 2016, the school began to make renovations to the playground to improve safety and ADA accessibility, and enhance the playground’s role as a community asset. The new playground was funded through what Superintendent Jill Louters called “tremendous donations” and a USDA...

The leaves are changing and most of North Dakota has experienced the first snowfall. These changes lead to the whirlwind of the next three months of holiday planning. October just started, and Christmas items have already been placed on the store shelves, but wait we have two big holidays before that… Halloween and Thanksgiving! It never fails, summer flies by, school begins, and before we know it the holidays are upon us. It’s time to buy Halloween candy and costumes, then on to turkey and all the fixings and wrapping up the year is Christmas....

When you get old, everything you open is a can of worms. Politics is never a choice between good and bad. It’s a choice between bad and worse. Sometimes, it isn’t even a choice. One-third of North Dakotans are obese, but not equally. My Uncle Olav was so fat that his shadow weighed three pounds. His wife, Olga, was so thin she had no shadow. McClusky sent a boat out to see where the canal went. They never came back. New Rockford sent a boat out to see where the canal went. They never came bac...
In the year 2000, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Back then, I was given a 28 percent chance of living 10 years – and I beat the disease. One of the many lessons I learned from that experience is this: we each have a bank of time in our lives, and it’s up to us to determine how we spend it. I promised myself that I wouldn’t waste my time. It’s one of many reasons that my vote against Judge Brett Kavanaugh wasn’t about politics. Rather, it was about the duty and responsibility I have as a U.S. senator to exercise my judgement to support a...
Recently, I was shopping at our local store and was amazed that holiday merchandise was already on the shelves. What happened to the tradition of launching the Christmas selling season right after turkey time at the end of November? Little did I know, the holiday shopping season now starts with Halloween and runs straight through until Christmas. The last three months of the year are critically important for our locally-owned small businesses. In fact, statistics show that locally-owned retailers earn as much as 50 percent or more of their tota...
As the United States Attorney for the District of Colorado, I am very familiar with the impact on Colorado and its people since marijuana was legalized with regulations and a special tax in 2012. We were told Colorado would lead the nation on a grand experiment in commercialized marijuana. Six years later - it’s a perfect time to pause and assess some results of that experiment. Recent reports from the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, from Denver Health, from Energy Associates, from the Colorado Department of Revenue and f...

As we are noticing in our ever-changing world, when one person is offended over something, the new social acceptance solution is to stop what we are planning and allow that individual to change or prevent the desires of many. It now appears that new rules of order are being established with the supposed intention of not offending anyone. I understand the idea to try and accommodate everyone with whatever they believe but since we are trending toward a puzzling destination, I’m troubled that our...
Have you ever walked away from a conversation with someone and thought, “Wow, that was a great conversation”? Thinking back on that conversation, it was probably a good conversation because they listened and you had the opportunity to express what was really on your heart. When we have the opportunity to truly express what’s on our hearts and minds— we feel valued! In James 1:19-20 it reads, “My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about...

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about restless leg syndrome? I’m 58 years old, and frequently have jerky, uncontrollable urges to move my legs, accompanied by a tingling sensation, and it keeps me awake at night. Jumpy John Dear John, If an irresistible urge to move your legs has you kicking in your sleep, then chances are pretty good you have restless leg syndrome (RLS), a condition that affects 7 to 10 percent of Americans. Here’s what you should know. RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom D...
Oct. 16, 2018 — The brewing industry was a fairly successful economy in the years prior to North Dakota’s statehood. Beck’s Brewery near Winona had been in business for twenty years before it caught fire and burned down in 1877, and the Turtle Mountain Brewery kept thirst at bay in Rolette County. Bismarck hoped to share in the considerable success of the industry. Unfortunately for the brewery, it came right before the “dry” spell in North Dakota. The Bismarck Brewery was built and in operation by 1885, but closed shortly after, because i...
