Several years ago, after her son started ziplining, my sister-in-law dared my almost 80-year-dad to zipline on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, on the trip they were planning to be taking there together. She even told him that she’d do it if he did. If you’re not familiar with a zipline, it consists of a pulley suspended on a cable, mounted on a slope. It is designed to enable a user to attach to the pulley and be propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the bottom. Zipline tours have bec...
We are a few weeks away from the 2018 North Dakota regular deer gun season and there’s a few key reminders for hunters to consider. Every year about this time, the state Game and Fish Department reminds hunters to find and verify their deer license. While you might think every deer hunter would know exactly the location of their license, it’s a good idea to verify it now. If it’s where you placed it when it arrived in late summer, you’re all set. If not, there’s plenty of time to get a replace...

If you walk around the new headquarters of Aldevron, you'll see slight reminders of what introduced Mike Chambers to his lifelong passion. "My grandparents and my parents were commercial beekeepers. I'm from Carrington, N.D., originally, and beekeeping is what really got me interested in science," said Mike Chambers, the co-founder and CEO of Aldevron. That fascination with science led him to start Aldevron with classmate John Ballantyne as they were about to graduate from North Dakota State...

Even though the football scoreboard is in place, donations are still sought for ballpark improvements proposed this summer. There are still $5,000 sponsorship spaces open for the Black Sox baseball scoreboard, which they plan to install next spring, and funds are still needed for some of the other improvements. Donations of any size are welcome and appreciated. For example, a donation of $500 gets the sponsor a banner on the field for one year, and any donation between $1 and $499 is good for a recognition plaque. This is a great o...

Tobacco prevention coordinators at Lake Region District Health Unit have seen an increase in the number of youth using JUUL and JUUL-like devices (e-cigarettes). Parents in the Ramsey, Pierce, Benson and Eddy county areas are encouraged to learn what these vaping devices look like and to talk to their kids about the dangers of using these products. A JUUL is a version of an e-cigarette that mimics the look of a USB stick, making it nearly impossible to spot. It charges with a laptop, fits in the palm of your hand and comes in flavors like...
