Last weekend’s early October blizzard continues to weigh heavily on the county and township roads. County Road Superintendent Todd Weber noted several areas of concern during the Eddy County Commission’s Oct. 15 meeting. There is water over the road leading to Walfords in Lake Washington Township, and County Road 6 by David Allmaras’ farm have trench washouts that need to be filled, as does County Road 1. Weber planned to inspect County Road 3 as well, as apparently the water was within a foot o...
An early October blizzard brought much of North Dakota to a screeching halt last weekend. Light rains began as early as Wednesday, turning to snow by Thursday. Area schools released classes early and folks made that much needed trip to the grocery store. Then just when it seemed that the snow was letting up, winds came in full force, pushing the heavy white stuff into towering drifts. With roads impassable and activities cancelled, most folks opted to spend Friday and much of Saturday morning...
The NR-S school board made a motion during their meeting on Monday, Oct. 14 to adjust salaries for and hire three new members to the food service staff. Superintendent Jill Louters cited this step as "a way to value those who feed and keep our children healthy." The additions will round out the kitchen staff to a total of four. Current staff member Tara Thumb intends to stay right where she is, serving food to the students on a daily basis. The three incoming staff will include Jennifer Krueger...
Agriculture generates much of the economy in Eddy County. Although this summer has brought more than enough rain to the farmland in the area, farmers are still encouraged that their soybean and corn crops will be bountiful. Third-generation growers Casey and Levi Weber are hopeful for dry and warm weather that will allow them to clear their fall crops productively. Running a farming operation comes quite naturally to the Weber brothers as their parents Bradley and Jill (Ferguson) also grew up on...
A challenging soybean harvest this fall is raising many storage and drying questions, according to Ken Hellevang, an agricultural engineer with North Dakota State University Extension. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service on Oct. 6, the percentage of soybeans dropping leaves was 92% in North Dakota, 80% in Minnesota, 78% in South Dakota, 68% in Iowa, 69% in Michigan, 86% in Nebraska and 60% in Wisconsin. The percentage of beans harvested was less than 10% in those states. "The impending snow and cold across the Plains...
Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee and a member of the Agriculture Committee, issued the following statement after the President announced that he has reached an agreement in principle on the first phase of a trade-deal with China. The first phase agreement includes Chinese purchases of $40 to $50 billion in U.S. agricultural products. According to the president, the agreement is expected to be finalized by mid-November. “Today’s phase one agreement with China, which includes Chinese purchases of...

Monday evening found Diane Rosenberg, Nancy Ludwig, Charlotte Koepplin and Ervin Longnecker among those who gathered at Buck-It's Bar for an informal meeting of Circle Trail Riders, Inc. Several later stopped in at Hanson's Bar and enjoyed an annual Duck Hunters grilled duck pieces wrapped in bacon. A fun happening that has been going on at Hanson's for over 20 years during duck hunting season in this area. Saturday Jimmy Indergaard enjoyed a phone chat with his sister Sharon Laxdal from Edinberg. Cory Jorgensen pulled into the Ervin...
Mother Nature really did a grand job of initiating winter. So sorry the farmers and ranchers are having such a hard time. My news is pretty short this week since so nobody could get out and about to make news. Doris Griffin reported that her chickens were happy to see her when she finally got out to the barn on Sunday. Chad Getscher was a Sunday visitor at Lester Roberts’ home. Lezlee Thorson also visited her Dad on Sunday. Other than that, Lester said he took a “snow-check” the rest of the week. Thursday evening, John and Donna Grann stopp...
Monday helper at the Shirley Packard home was son Calvin. Tuesday nephew Todd Harrison was a helper getting outside things done and making ready for the coming snow. Robert Lies, Bill and Diana Ziegler, Duff and Sandy Settelmeyer and Kim Brown were among Circle Trail Riders Inc. to hold an informal meeting of sorts at Buck-It's Bar Monday evening. Later several took in the Annual Duck Hunters feed at Hanson’s Bar. Todd Koepplin was a busy snow pusher Sunday at the Martin and Janelle Koepplin, Charlotte Koepplin, Taylor and Amanda Koepplin and...
A recent opinion piece written by columnist and former Democrat Lieutenant Gov. Lloyd Omdahl continues the misleading, coordinated left-wing spin machine’s narrative regarding the Constitutional Amendment which created the North Dakota Ethics Commission. The Republican leadership in the North Dakota House and Senate formed special committees last session to address the measure, a rare move. The committees worked diligently, holding public hearings on legislation to comply with the measure’s requirement that the Legislature pass laws to hel...
A Jeb Bush tweet this week got me thinking about some of the ways our nasty partisan politics has been hurting our kids. Paraphrasing Jeb, he asked, "How can parents teach their children that using bad language is wrong when we have a president and members of Congress who constantly use profanity to talk about each other?" Jeb's tweet also reminded me of something a wise Sunday school teacher of mine once said: "There are more things 'caught' than 'taught.' " I often quote that line when I'm...
On Oct. 9, Pacific Gas & Electric began shutting down power to about 750,000 customers (affecting as many as 2 million people) in California. The company claims the shutdowns are necessary to reduce the risk that its power lines and other infrastructure will cause wildfires like last year's Camp Fire, which killed 85 people and caused $16.5 billion in damage. The Camp Fire was an extreme result, and the blackouts are an extreme response, but they're far from the only indicators that Americans should no longer trust aging "grid" distribution...
All of Washington is vibrating like the foam on a latte in the cup holder of a convertible jeep riding railroad tracks over a bridge. Republicans are scrambling to hold together their diverse coalition of rich white men frightened about the next election and well-to-do white men worried about the next election. Democrats also seem mildly engaged, which to them borders on a frenzy. It's all due to the substantial evidence that Donald Trump conspired to withhold military aid to Ukraine unless President Volodomyr Zelensky agreed to assist in the...

The John Tesh radio show told me about an experiment done on competitive bicyclists. All the participants started by competing in a hot-weather bike ride. Then they were split in half, one group continued to train physically in the hot-weather conditions, and the other group focused their training on mental health, including positive affirmations, learning how to deal with uncomfortable situations while racing. In the follow-up competition, the group who focused on mental training improved their speed and duration by 25%. We’ve all heard s...
The Oct. 3, 1902, “New Rockford Transcript” mentioned the “Sanborn Enterprise,” the “McHenry Tribune” owned by A.L. Lowden, and the “Michigan City Independent” owned by Mrs. Doherty. “WANTED—A girl 15 years of age to work for her board and go to school. Apply Mrs. Wm. Bucklin.” Mrs. P.J. Hester had for sale household goods and “a fine Astrachan jacket.” For sale by P.J. Hester: about 25 work horses, including four unbroken ones; one span of three-year-old colts; four brood mares with colts; about 20 three-year-old heifers; and around 10 sp...
Dear Savvy Senior, Where can I find out about alternative transportation services for my 80-year-old mother? It’s time that she gives up driving, but before she does, we need to figure out how she’ll get around. Inquiring Son Dear Inquiring, Alternative transportation options for seniors who no longer drive vary widely by community, so what’s available to your mom will depend on where she lives. Here’s what you should know. While most urban areas offer seniors a variety of alternative transpo...
“The Long Winter,” by Laura Ingalls Wilder has long been one of my favorite books. I have read it and re-read it countless times myself and have also read it out loud to my kids and daycare kids. Wilder’s story includes the preparations for winter, like the amount of time and effort that went into making sure that they had enough food and wood on hand for heat. The stories about their food preparations were some of my favorite; the food they preserved and stored away from the garden. My famil...
The consensus top two teams in Nine-Man football in the state of North Dakota met on a sopping wet and slippery field in Cavalier last Tuesday night, Oct. 15, for the right to be this year's Region 2 champions. And it took until after the regulation horn sounded to come up with that verdict. The NR-S Rockets and Cavalier Tornadoes matched each other punch for punch with a 14-14 score at the end of four quarters, but Tanner Urlaub's two-point conversion after his own six-yard touchdown run in...
The NR-S Rockets boarded the bus following a five-set marathon Super Region win in Fort Totten Monday, Oct. 14, but the mood was more of relief than celebratory. That may have been because Coach Sara Myhre's group, in their hearts, might have overlooked the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians and their winless season record of 0-10 to that juncture. Particularly concerning about the Rockets' 25-15, 22-25, 18-25, 25-13 and 15-5 victory was the fact that going into the match, the Lady Indians had...
Mother Nature took a sledgehammer to area sports schedules, and the NR-S volleyball team was no exception to her wrath. The Rockets’ match originally slated on October 10 with Dunseith was moved to Tuesday, November 5, with junior high starting action at 5 p.m. and followed by junior varsity and varsity matches. Because of the scheduling conflict presented by the football team’s game with Cavalier moving to last Tuesday, another Super Region 4 match planned for that day with North Star in New...
In between bouts of nasty weather, whether it be rain or dense snow, the hardy NR-S cross country runners took to one of the bigger meets in the area on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Souris Valley Invitational in Minot drew over 250 runners for both the boys’ and girls’ varsity divisions. NR-S’ top finisher was junior Chloe Heinz, who earned a spot in the top 100 with a 90th place time of 22:18.28. Katie Allmaras, an eighth grader, took home 149th (24:02.83), and sophomore Mya Cudworth was 178th (25:5...
