Loren Anderson, who’s accused of running down his live-in girlfriend on Highway 281 and purposefully colliding with her vehicle, now also stands accused of witness tampering and violating bail conditions. In documents filed with the Southeast Judicial District on Oct. 12, the prosecution lists multiple text messages which they argue prove Anderson has broken the law while still behind bars. As a result, Judge James Hovey has increased Anderson’s bail to $5,000 cash. His previous bail would hav...

Eddy County farmer and long-time 4-H supporter Brenda Rue was the recipient of $5,000 from the America's Farmers Grow Communities Bayer Fund program. She chose to donate the funds to Eddy County 4-H to put towards renovations of the static building. It was the first formal donation made towards the project, according to NDSU Extension Agent Michelle Gilley. "Improvements to the building...

Board members Patti Larson, Darci Joseph, Laurie Westby, Tara Hanson and Joanna Larson conducted business related to the nearly complete renovation of the home at 337 Sheyenne Avenue. Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some simplified universal television remotes for seniors? My 88-year-old dad, who lives in a retirement community, has some dementia and gets confused with all the buttons on his remote. As a result, he keeps accidentally reprogramming his TV set. Searching Son Dear Searching, Most modern TV remotes – that come with dozens of unnecessary buttons – can be confusing for anyone to operate but can be especially challenging for elderly seniors. Fortunately, the...
Gov. Doug Burgum issued an executive order today convening a special session of the state Legislature on Oct. 23 to address the components of a budget bill that was recently voided as unconstitutional by the North Dakota Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled Sept. 28 that Senate Bill 2015, the appropriations bill for the state Office of Management and Budget (OMB), was void because it violated the state Constitution’s rule that states, “No bill may embrace more than one subject, which must be expressed in its title.” The court’s ruling...
I grew up understanding that being part of a community meant giving of your time and talents whenever possible to enrich others. My dad was a member of the Robinson Lions Club when I was a kid. My mom took us to many activities and events led by volunteers, including 4-H and Sunday School. Both my parents served on church boards and committees, and I remember watching my grandmother prepare and serve meals at funerals and other special events in her church. We volunteer. It’s what we do. T...
For the last 4 months I have been traveling in North Dakota, exploring the ways that ordinary folks in rural areas are revitalizing their communities through immigration. It has been a heartwarming journey. Our state is made up of good people with abundant common sense, whose memories stir them to go extra measures time after time to help new neighbors. It is the North Dakota way. So many of our churches have an ethnic heritage and memory. As I started this journey and realized that a new wave of Ukrainians is entering North Dakota, it seemed...
William Howard Taft, the only man to serve as President of the United States and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, once observed that the Court was his idea of what Heaven must be like. This prompted Justice Felix Frankfurter to declare that “he had a very different notion of heaven than any I know anything about.” Taft reached “Heaven” in 1920 when President Warren G. Harding appointed him to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Harding asked Taft whether he “would accept a position on the Supreme Court.” Taft said he would accept only the...

Recently, I spoke about a wonderful man who is a member of our church, and if you recall he just turned 95 years young. His name is Charlie and since then I’ve had the privilege to spend some time with him. I listened intently as he shared his amazing testimony about what has been going on with him for the last couple of years. He said throughout his life he had been a person of few words, a quiet person who just minded his own business and kept his thoughts to himself. He believed his l...
On Friday, Oct. 13, the New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock Rockets completed their regular season with a dominant win over the North Border Eagles in Walhalla, N.D. The victory brought the Rockets' regular season record to a perfect 8-0 – their first undefeated regular season since 2018. The story of Friday night's game in Walhalla was similar to most of the Rockets' games this season: pure dominance. Quarterback Easton Simon got the scoring started with a pair of touchdown passes in the first q...

On Tuesday, Oct. 17, the No. 7 New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets took on the No. 2 Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich Cardinals in what many believe was a preview of the eventual Super Region 4 championship game. For the Cardinals, who are typically a sure bet to qualify for state, it was also an opportunity to get back at the Rockets for last year's region championship, when the Rockets pulled off a stunning upset and qualified for their first state tournament in program history. The Rockets, meanwhile,...
The opening shots, so to speak, of the 2023 hunting season officially began over two months ago on August 15 with the early Canada goose season. If you’re like many, the intention of brushing up on your swing and transitioning from fishing to shotgunning isn’t as gradual as you’d like. And honestly, I won’t begrudge a miss or “aw shucks” moment or two. Many hunters and anglers play softball and golf, and the transition between the two is similar to fishing and hunting. The only comparison...
Talking with clients about the legacy they wish to leave behind is an essential part of my job as a financial advisor. How do they want to share their wealth with loved ones and charities that matter to them? What values do they want to pass down and what financial goals do they want to support for their children and grandchildren? How can they transfer their assets in a tax-efficient and planful manner? These are some of the many questions we cover in the course of these conversations. If you find yourself asking similar questions about your...
Well, the Rockets couldn't have drawn it up much better than that. Taking on the Hankinson Pirates in New Rockford on Saturday, Oct. 21, the No. 2 New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock Rockets were looking to begin their most promising playoff run in years with a statement – and that's exactly what they did. The Rockets kicked off the 9-man football playoffs receiving the opening kickoff, and began what would be the game's only competitive drive from their own 29-yard line. In an early 3rd-and-long s...
