On Oct. 15, the Trump administration unveiled a new agreement on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS)— a policy intended to secure America’s domestic energy production. The plan, which will expand renewable fuel quotas, is being touted as a win for U.S. farmers and proof that the president is a champion of rural America. But the President’s work on this issue isn’t done yet. While farmers can rest assured that Trump has their back, there is an entirely different segment of the American public that is crying out for relief: the forgotten blue-colla...
Twelve presidential wannabes standing in a row on stage for three hours. Three friendly liberal journalists under-handing softball questions to them. Tons of BS about free government healthcare and why Trump should be impeached. Until the personal shock I got at the end of the Democrats’ debate on CNN woke me from my stupor, I wasn’t sure I wasn’t watching a rerun of last month’s debate. It was the same uninspiring lineup of leftwing political featherweights, plus a self-made billion...
Maybe – just maybe – Americans will get some relief from the relentlessly rising prices of pharmaceuticals. That, of course depends on Congress pushing back against the drug companies’ formidable lobbying machine, their generous campaign contributions, and the industry’s historical coziness with members of Congress. But this year seems different. When you consider that the country’s spending on prescription drugs increased by 28% from 2011 to 2016, it’s easy to see why it’s harder for politicians to ignore the public anger over prices of lif...

I need to exercise more. No doubt. I know this. Our town (and the internet!) has resources to help me carve out time for exercise. Exercise lengthens lives, and increases quality of life. It helps our brains and our mental health. So why don’t I do it? Maybe, for you, it’s not exercise. Maybe you’re good at exercise. But you have something. You have something you wish was better in your life. You have something you know would be good for you, but you still don’t do enough. Prayer and/or meditation? Morning devotions? Don’t floss enough? D...
The Oct. 10, 1902, “New Rockford Transcript” stated that movement of grain to the east was hampered by a lack of locomotives; elevators all along the rail lines were filled to capacity with wheat. The past week had been ideal for flax threshing. John Anderson was painting the Hotel Brown and the Opera House. The long distance telephone crew had arrived and would start erecting poles and wires to connect New Rockford to the outside world. The central office would be in Babcock & Bucklin’s Drug Store “and the booth has already arrived...

My 82-year-old mother, who lives alone, is supposed to take several different medications at various times of the day but often forgets. Working Daughter Dear Working, Anybody who juggles multiple medications can relate to the problem of forgetting to take a medication, or not remembering whether they already took it. This is especially true for older adults who take...
Oct. 31, 2019 — Today is Halloween, a good day for ghost stories, and North Dakota has no shortage of them. Legends have been floating around for years of the “Kindred Lights,” the “Grim Reaper” in a Baptist church near Fredonia, the “Fatal Stump” near Belfield, and the “Gas Chamber” on the deserted Oss farmstead near Hatton. A Minot legend contends that three different ghosts haunt a four-story house that was later turned into a gift shop. The first is of a man who drowned in the river that runs behind the house, and at 4:39 a.m., it’s believe...
Yesterday, a Facebook meme made me smile and think of my dog. Along with a picture of a dog’s greying muzzle were the words that said, “I love the energy of little puppies, but there is just something special about the sweet face of an old dog.” Yes, the meme made me think about my current dog, our German Shepherd-Labrador mix but I got a little nostalgic and started reminiscing about the old dogs of my youth. My favorite was a gentle, yet protective German Shepherd named Christy. One of my f...
