    Amy Wobbema|Jan 14, 2019

Repayment of the $4.8 million loan approved by USDA-Rural Development for the City of New Rockford's water infrastructure project was discussed at the Jan. 7 commission meeting. The general consensus of the commission was to avoid special assessments for the project. Instead, commissioners reviewed calculations from Ritzke for increasing monthly water utility rates and/or using sales tax revenue. Ritzke said an additional $34.11 per month per user would be needed to repay the entire debt by incr...

  • Grief and gratitude: dealing with loss

    Rachael Brash|Jan 14, 2019

My dad loved lutefisk. It's unusual that people do, and even more unusual that he did. My dad was born and raised in Japan and immigrated by himself to the United States at the age of 19. But when he was introduced to the technique of eating lutefisk he understood you have to put something on it to make it slide down easier because you don't want to make the rookie mistake of trying to chew. Most use butter, but Dad used soy sauce. My parents were near the age of 40 when I came along, and Mom had lost a few pregnancies prior to my arrival. So...

    Rachel Brazil|Jan 14, 2019

"Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them, and filling emptiness we didn't ever know we had." -Thom Jones For Colette Byrum of New Rockford, this quote couldn't be closer to the truth. "They just seemed to find me," she said, speaking of the dogs in need who, over the years, have shown up near her workplace in Fort Totten. The animals she has rescued have often been in rough shape, suffering from injury, infection or neglect. It was second nature for Byrum to take in these wayward...

  • Local support available for suicide attempt survivors

Calvin Packard, Eddy County Community Cares|Jan 14, 2019

Hello to all. We have just finished the statistical worst period for suicide. National statistics show the holidays are when a higher percentage of suicides occur. Part of the mission of the Eddy County Community Cares is suicide prevention. This is the reason for us in the ECCC to promote the formation of a support group for suicide attempt survivors. One of the worst statistics of survivors of a self-attempt of suicide is that only one out of four die a natural death. This does not mean the three die by suicide. It shows that these three pers...

  • Chief Justice says state's court system is 'under water'

    Diane Newberry, ND Newspaper Association|Jan 14, 2019

Last year, the North Dakota court system cut 55.5 positions across the state as a result of across-the-board budget cuts. Court staffs that could have been considered lean even before the cuts are feeling the pressure, according to court officials. Rod Olson, a state courts system administrator, said that with only one staff member on duty, people seeking services in his districts find an empty desk “on a regular basis.” His unit oversees courts in the East Central and Southeast judicial districts, covering 17 counties. “We don’t like the fact...

  • Don't import foreign price controls- break them

    Phil Kerpen|Jan 14, 2019

Americans are justifiably angry that we pay the highest prescription drugs prices in the world; anger President Trump tapped into on the campaign trail. The disparity exists because other rich countries use price control schemes, forcing American consumers to provide the returns on capital that justify the enormous research and development costs associated with bringing new cures to market. The rest of the world free-rides on our innovation. The good news is that the Trump administration has been aggressive on the trade front in efforts to...

  • Alexa, why won't you reply to my father?

    Tom Purcell|Jan 14, 2019

Is technology innovation doing us more harm than good? My family offers proof that it is. My parents recently got Amazon's supposedly "intelligent" personal assistant, Alexa. Ask Alexa to play a song and she will (through her speaker). Ask her to turn the lights on or off, and, if they're plugged into a "smart" device, she'll do that, too. Ask her about the weather, news, traffic or sports and she'll search the internet for answers. But Alexa is causing incredible turmoil at my parents' house. "...

  • Open letter to the Democratic Congress

    LLoyd Omdahl|Jan 14, 2019

When President Donald Trump demeaned Viet Nam Hero John McCain, Republicans rolled their eyes and said nothing. Democrats demonstrated political rage. When Trump talked about sexually assaulting women, Republicans rolled their eyes and said nothing. Trump dismissed it as “locker room banter.” Democrats demonstrated more political rage. Trump has repeatedly attacked individuals and groups while bullying them into silence with his scepter. He has done his best to destroy civil discourse and has...

    Jan 14, 2019

Hired Hand’s Contract Case by Jayme L Lob Jan. 15, 2019 — A strange court case was reported from Fargo on this day in 1904. J. H. Hanson, a hired farm hand, filed a lawsuit against his employer, Mrs. Eliza A. Francis. Hanson claimed that Francis had cheated him out of a contract, and five months worth of pay; Francis contended that the man was a lazy scoundrel that had refused to leave her farm after she had fired him for unsatisfactory work. The presiding judge, Justice Ryan, grew even more perplexed as the entire story unraveled before the...

  • Savvy Senior: Can You Deduct Medicare Costs on Your Income Taxes?

    Jim Miller|Jan 14, 2019

Dear Savvy Senior, Can I deduct my Medicare premiums, deductibles and copayments on my income taxes? I had a knee replacement surgery last year and spent quite a bit on medical care out-of-pocket and would like to know what all I can write off. Frugal Dave Dear Dave, The short answer is yes, you can deduct your Medicare costs but only if you meet certain conditions required by the IRS. Here’s how it works. As a taxpayer, you’re allowed to deduct many medical and dental expenses as well as you...

  • Sermonette for January 14, 2019

Rev. Mindy Meier, First Congregational Church|Jan 14, 2019

I need to exercise more. No doubt. I know this. Our town (and the internet!) has resources to help me carve out time for exercise. Exercise lengthens lives, and increases quality of life. It helps our brains and our mental health. So why don’t I do it? Maybe, for you, it’s not exercise. Maybe you’re good at exercise. But you have something. You have something you wish was better in your life. You have something you know would be good for you, but you still don’t do enough. Prayer and/or meditation? Morning devotions? Don’t floss enough? D...

The newly-minted 10th-ranked team in Class B, New Rockford-Sheyenne, blitzed the Warwick Warriors out of the gates for 31 first quarter points, and kept up the tempo for a full 32 minutes to take a 96-58 rout Tuesday night, Jan. 8 in New Rockford. K.C. Gardner Jr.|Jan 14, 2019

On March 15, 1902, Albert Hendrickson, son of Eddy County Treasurer Hendrickson, was visiting relatives near Sheyenne. He misjudged the intensity of the storm and started out for another relative’s home a short distance away. He was caught up in the thick blizzard and wandered in the snow for three hours before he found shelter. His badly frozen face and hands would require a long time to recover. About 11 p.m. that day, the delayed passenger train arrived with 83 passengers. After the hotels f...

  • Bjerke's big game carries Rocket girls to win

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 14, 2019

Others may get more of the publicity at times, but NR-S sophomore Dani Bjerke hasn’t necessarily shied away from the spotlight in the past when called upon for an offensive spark. Her game-winner in the 2018 District 7 Tournament first round this past Feb. over Lakota comes to mind, where the then-freshman buried a three-pointer to give the Rockets a 40-39 stunner against Lakota. Bjerke put together her biggest boxscore as a varsity player Friday night, Jan. 4, scoring 27 points to lead the R...
