Sarah has spent the past year embarking on a career-changing journey. "I knew I needed more opportunities to connect with people, businesses, projects and community, but I had no idea what that meant," says New Rockford resident and entrepreneur Sarah Smith Warren. She began by participating in several professional opportunities through the Bush Foundation. One of these opportunities took Sarah and a group of professionals from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota all the way to Washington,...
The votes have been cast and the ballots have been counted. Eddy County Auditor Patty Williams and this season’s poll workers have another election year behind them, and I have become a little more informed about the voting process. As I sat preparing this article on Election night, I was full of anticipation and excitement. Real-time data makes it possible for us to witness the results unfold on the screen. As my dad and I watched the results come in, we discussed the electoral college as w...
It's been a long week, but we're on the mend. Due to staff exposure to the novel coronavirus, the Transcript office has been closed to walk-in traffic since shortly after press time on Thursday, Oct. 29. Staff have thoroughly deep cleaned the facility and plan to reopen once their 14-day quarantine has passed. As you can see from this newspaper, as well as our presence online this past week, we have continued to fulfill our mission to deliver all the news and information you expect. We...
In an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus in Eddy County, the City of New Rockford issued a mask mandate effective Wednesday, November 4 at 8 a.m. The mandate was adopted after the Lake Region Health Unit recommended such actions, citing the increasing COVID-19 numbers in the county. The decision was made at a regular city council meeting on Monday, November 2. The mandate will model a similar directive issued by the City of Devils Lake last week. While there is no legal penalty...
What New Rockford-Sheyenne's volleyball team went through to get their conference games in the books was akin to cramming for end-of-semester exams, minus the procrastination excuse. The team's two-week absence from the court due to COVID-19 quarantine precautions backloaded the Rockets' schedule to the point that they were forced to play four Super Region 4 matches in a six-day timeframe. And once the dust cleared, NR-S was a tougher team for it. Coach Sara Myhre's club won an emotional...

Older North Dakotans are receiving unexpected phone calls offering them a plastic chip card to replace their paper Medicare card. Of course, the calls are a scam to get them to give up personal information. It’s just one of many impostor scams that continue to evolve and find new victims. Impostor scams are exactly what they sound like— crooks pose as someone else to try to convince you to send them money. Impostors pretend to be employees of the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other government agencies. Imp...

Halloween 2020. It was a COVID-19 fright. The North Dakota wind showed up. Some stayed in, others went to the movies, and a few participated in the time-honored tradition of trick-or-treating. One thing for sure Halloween was different. Whatever people did, there was a buzz of gratitude in New Rockford that there even was a Halloween experience. NR-S Sources of Strength students added to the buzz with a Trick-or-Treat Food Drive. This generosity campaign has been in the works for the past month...

I usually avoid discussing politics in my columns, mainly because I would rather not be disowned by family members, unfriended by friends, or doused with milkshakes and other beverages by complete strangers at the local Whataburger. This time, though, I just can’t help getting out my big ol’ stir-up-sumpin’ stick. I’ll begin by announcing that I recently cast (as in chucked, lobbed or hurled) my vote for President of the United States of ‘Merica. I decided to vote early so I could avoid the airborne particles of other humans on Election...
Did you realize that commercial radio got its start on November 2, 1920 when legendary KDKA in Pittsburgh broadcast the results of the Harding-Cox presidential race? Almost overnight, radio transitioned from domination by ham operators to an actual business with schedules, programming and sponsors. Now the world has experienced an entire CENTURY peppered with FDR’s “Fireside Chats,” serialized “Captain Midnight” adventures, the original soap operas, traffic and weather reports, Top 40 countdown...
They did it in 1918, we can do it now The words of Dr. Deborah Birx were stark. On a visit to North Dakota last week, Birx, the White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator, laid it on the line: “. . . in your grocery stores and in your restaurants and frankly even in your hotels, this is the least use of masks that we have seen in retail establishments of any place we have been.” She’s criss-crossed the country, and we’re the worst. Perhaps it’s time to learn a lesson from our ancestors. More than a hundred years ago, the world and the n...

Do you have a favorite Bible verse? John 3:16 is always a top pick, as is Psalm 23. Other top picks include Micah 6:8, Isaiah 41:10, Hebrews 11:1 and Philippians 4:7. Each verse, in fact all of Scripture, is chock full of promise and grace. I discovered my favorite Bible verse around 20 years ago, and it has captured and challenged my heart and imagination since then. Here it is: From his fullness we have all received grace upon grace - John 1:16 When I think back to my discovery of this verse, I am pretty sure that at the time, I was feeling...
On August 18, 1903, William Cahill, having been found guilty of the murder of his brother, was taken to the State Penitentiary by Sheriff J.E. Bennett and George Nunn in Bismarck to begin his 10-year sentence; the court had extended the time in which he could request a new trial for 60 days, but refused to stay the execution of the original judgment. On that day the partnership between Charles Lyman and George J. Ellis in the Lyman & Ellis Cigar Company was dissolved with Lyman taking over the...
The widespread expression of hopes, fears and predictions about the forthcoming votes and opinions of Justice Amy Coney Barrett reflect a practice as old as the republic itself. Since the beginning, mere mention of a prospective nominee to the high court has inspired advice, counsel and warnings from the four corners of the nation. In 1812, Thomas Jefferson issued a stark warning to his friend, President James Madison, who contemplated the nomination to the court of Joseph Story, a Harvard Law School professor and eminent scholar. “He will out-...
Dear Savvy Senior, Will my Medicare benefits be affected if Obamacare is overturned by the Supreme Court? Concerned Beneficiary Dear Concerned, Unfortunately, yes. If the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – also known as Obamacare – gets repealed by the Supreme Court next year, it will weaken Medicare and increase costs for beneficiaries. Here’s what you should know. Currently, about 60 million people are covered under Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and peopl...
I sat down to prepare a selection for this week's Archival Anecdotes with Veteran's Day in mind but found it difficult to select any one item from the Eddy County Museum. This was mostly due to the fact that there are so many military artifacts that extend back hundreds of years. Rather than choose just one artifact to discuss, this Veteran's Day I offer you readers a timeline of artifacts just to see how far back we go. But first, a few disclaimers. Veteran's Day was originally founded as Armis...
