    Amy Wobbema|Jan 25, 2021

The New Rockford Eagles Club made a big donation to the second gymnasium project this month. The two presentations made by Superintendent Jill Louters and fundraising committee members had quite an impression on the board members, and as a result they contributed $50,000 to the project. As we reported last week, approximately $365,000 in donations have poured in for the gymnasium over the past nine months, which includes the Eagles' contribution. I sat down with six members of the Eagles Club's...

  • N.D. House Update: Jan. 25, 2021

Reps. Bill Devlin and Don Vigesaa|Jan 25, 2021

The pace of the 67th Legislative Assembly certainly picked up this week as committees are very busy hearing bills and sending them to the House floor for action. Unlike many states, all bills introduced in our chambers must have a committee hearing and a vote in the chamber, where they were introduced. A bill can be withdrawn by the sponsor, before the hearing, but even that takes a vote in the respective chamber. We received the latest financial forecasts this week. Allen Knudson, Legislative Council Budget Analyst, gave a presentation to the...

  • Thoughts can become action

    Calvin J. Packard|Jan 25, 2021

A few New Rockford residents have inquired about the United State Flag that is being flown with blue field down in my yard. In article 4 of the U.S. Flag code this action is recognized as an international symbol of distress. I chose to take this action on 12 Nov 2020 as a result of thoughts of self harm that arose following the election on 4 Nov. I have not had these thoughts since 2010. The stem of this problem was my realization America is now headed to a full Socialism form of government....

  • Liberty in 2021: It's common sense

    Lisa B. Nelson|Jan 25, 2021

On January 10, 1776, impassioned Americans – from the streets of the Colonies to private meetings in taverns – were moved by an anonymous pamphlet calling for independence and liberty from Great Britain. Today it is recognized as one of the most important rallying cries leading up to the Revolutionary War, and we know it as Thomas Paine's Common Sense. Eleven years after its publication, in 1787, the cries for liberty were answered when the Founding Fathers wrote and America ratified the U.S...

  • Big tech, right wing media and cartoonist logic

    Daryl Cagle|Jan 25, 2021

While the mainstream media is rightfully focused on the second impeachment of President Trump and the assault on the Capitol, right wing media is obsessed with “Freedom of Speech.” Right wing outlets are calling for action against the “censorship” of conservatives by big, liberal, tech companies after Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites banned President Trump, taking away his preferred megaphone. The radical social media platform Parler was shut down after Amazon refused to continue hosting the site. I run a newspaper syndica...

  • Sermonette: January 25, 2021

    Pr. Jeff Halverson|Jan 25, 2021

Quite a few years ago, about 20-25 years ago when living in Colorado, the lottery jackpot there reached an unheard of level. I don't recall the exact amount but I think it was getting close to $10 million dollars. A huge amount for a lottery back in those days. One day a colleague and I made a pact. We would each buy a lottery ticket and if either of us won, we would have to buy the other lunch at the McDonalds about two blocks from the office building where we worked. Part of the irony was that neither of us ate at McDonalds. There was a...

  • We the People: Removing a president

    David Adler|Jan 25, 2021

Memories of the footage of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, on January 6, 2021, will be forever etched in the minds of the citizenry. No American since the War of 1812 has seen an assault on our Temple of Democracy. This siege – a failed coup – was incited by President Donald Trump who, in a speech to thousands of his supporters at a rally that he organized, told his faithful, yet again, that the 2020 election had been rigged, that victory had been stolen from him, and that they had to “fight like hell” to take their country back. The vio...

  • Archival Anecdotes: What's in a name

    Rachel Brazil|Jan 25, 2021

Archives are only as complete as the information within. In fact, there is one particular topic lacking information that bothers me. Many of the women who resided in Eddy County during the early years remain unknown in the museum archives. You see somewhere along the line cultural etiquette got in the way of cultural preservation. Addressing a married woman as Mrs. has been the proper rule for generations. So when folks named the faces in the photograph below, it was perfectly natural to list...

  • Rockets get win over Knights, fall to #2 Indians in district play

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 25, 2021

New Rockford-Sheyenne split a pair of District 7 games in this last week's action, finishing with a 64-34 win at the NRS-S Gym against Dakota Prairie and coming up on the losing end of a 73-53 score against second-ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan in Fort Totten on January 15 and 18. The victory against the Knights came after a lackluster first half of basketball for the Rockets in which the teams were deadlocked at 22 all. That all changed in the third quarter, when NR-S blew the game wide open...
