  • The hunting season style show

    Tony Bender|Nov 18, 2019

With all due respect, my old pickup has killed more deer than some hunters. It's a 2005 Silverado. Muzzle velocity, about 65 mph. It's a little crinkly, but still running strong. Dylan's driving it these days. You know the hunters I'm talking about. They look like L.L. Bean and drive shiny Land Rovers with out-of-state plates. I hate to sound provincial or speak in stereotypes, but that's my observation. For a few weeks in November out here, everyone looks a Denver Bronco fan. When deer season opens, I wear neon-orange Kevlar and wrap myself...

  • Holiday consumerism: Who decides what "nobody really needs?"

    Thomas Knapp|Nov 18, 2019

"Wasting resources, capital and income on stuff nobody really needs," Charles Hugh Smith wrote in 2017, "is a monumental disaster on multiple fronts. Rather than establish incentives to conserve and invest wisely, our system glorifies waste and the destruction of income and capital, as if burning time, capital, resources and wealth on stuff nobody needs is strengthening the economy." I come across the "stuff nobody needs" argument frequently, from voices all across the political spectrum, for reasons ranging from economic to environmental to sp...

  • College football fever, with nausea

    Jase Graves|Nov 18, 2019

Now that America is deep into the bowels of college football season, I’m experiencing my yearly gastrointestinal angst about my Texas A&M Aggies. I call them “my” Texas A&M Aggies because I spent an untold amount of my parents’ cash in College Station on textbooks, apartment rent, and DoubleDave’s Pepperoni Rolls in my pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts in English from Texas A&M University. But despite my claims of ownership, many loyal Aggie football fans would probably label me a two-percenter. And I can’t really blame them. You see, I haven’t b...

  • Driving an 'underwater' car is no fun

    Tom Purcell|Nov 18, 2019

What’s the best car on the road? One that’s paid off. That’s what my father loves to say. Regrettably, too many Americans aren’t heeding his advice. What’s worse is that they’re taking on “underwater” loans that far exceed their cars’ value. The Wall Street Journal recently featured a 40-year-old electrician who bought a $27,000 Jeep with a $45,000 loan. How is that possible? A string of bad luck was part of it. He “replaced one because it had 100,000 miles and another when he went through a div...

  • Sermonette: Trusting the Father

    Rhianne Bowman|Nov 18, 2019

“Trusting the Father” by Rhianne Bowman One of the big things God taught me in college was how to trust him. I came to college and didn't know what my major was going to be or what I wanted to do with my life and people kept telling me "just trust God, he will lead you in the right direction." I got frustrated because I wanted to trust God but I didn't know how to do that. As I went through my four years of college, God slowly started to teach me how to trust him. It started with small things, my class schedule. He worked everything out, ope...
