The New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board of Education convened on Tuesday, Nov. 13. There was a tone of optimism and forward thinking in the room throughout the evening. The first annual tree lighting ceremony held at the Carrington Medical Center was on Dec. 1, 1987. This tree was planted in October 1987. At that time one could stand on a ladder and reach the top. Now 32 years later, even with the help of Brad Weninger of Otter Tail Power Company, the use of their boom truck, and the assistance from Carrington Medical Center maintenance, one can barely reach the top. Lights may be purchased in memory of a loved one or as a greeting to family and friends. The forms can be found in local churches, at Carrington...

On the weekend before Veterans Day, the assembled leaders of the western world gathered at Aisne-Marne, an American cemetery in France (where 2,288 Americans soldiers, mostly Marines, died in the Battle of Belleau Wood in World War I.) Trump skipped the ceremony – to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War I and 243 years since the founding of the Marine Corps – because it was raining. Later, a State Dinner was held to honor the occasion. Again, the heads of state of virtually eve...
Every year after Thanksgiving, Americans kick off the holiday shopping season with big stores advertising deal after deal. Not long ago, Americans during the holiday season typically would visit locally-owned small retailers in a downtown area to purchase all of their gifts. Business owners would decorate their shops with lights and ornaments or create elaborate window displays to grab the imagination of passersby and encourage them inside. It was a magical time of year, and many of us still hold on to those memories today. With the dramatic...
The East Room of the White House with its vaulted ceilings, ornate chandeliers and gold curtains – is the closest thing to a throne room the United States has. When set up for a presidential news conference, as it was on Wednesday morning, it is magisterial. The president is announced, and the doors to a long hallway swing open. He steps onto the podium, towering over reporters squeezed tightly into the wooden chairs before him. It feels a bit like an audience with a king. And on Wednesday, the king was angry. Donald Trump held this formal n...

As I was reflecting on Mark 13:1-8, the assigned gospel reading for Sunday, Nov. 18, I began to wonder: Is Jesus a pessimist or an optimist? I think this text reveals a significant difference in how Christ looks at things compared to how we see them. The one disciple, who was struck by the beauty of the temple buildings, could very well represent each one of us. In our human condition, we are so easily caught up in beautiful things that won’t last. Maybe the disciples wondered if Jesus had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed when he said, ...
While North Dakota’s 2018 deer gun season continues through Nov. 25, it still generates a fair amount of questions and conversation preseason, midseason and post season. First off, this year’s deer hunting season did open later than what a lot of people think is normal. The traditional deer opener for more than three decades has been the Friday before Nov. 11. That means the range for the deer opener, based on this rotating standardized approach, is Nov.4 through Nov. 10. For 2018, the Nor...
