by Nathan Price Last August, Foster County commissioners claimed that nearly $100,000 was owed to them by Wells County, which caught several county officials there off guard. The nearly $100K amounted to four years’ worth of social service payments owed to Foster County that hadn’t been distributed, and Wells County commissioners only learned of the problem after an article came out in the Transcript. In the months since, Wells County Auditor Dan Stutlien and others have been poring over hun...
"It's the old story: no work and no pay make jack pretty scarce," as writer Howard Brubaker once said. Wander back to Christmas 1930 and the height of the Great Depression with DPRCA's heartwarming holiday musical, "The Gifts of the Magi," opening Saturday, Nov. 30. It is Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers, Jim and Della, the prospects are bleak. It's the height of the Great Depression and both are out of work and penniless. But as those familiar with O. Henry's famous story know,... Full story
Many of you have likely seen my name in a few 701 Rundown articles or met me around town. As the newest, and perhaps farthest-flung, addition to the New Rockford Transcript, I've already grown fond of the New Rockford community. On my first day, I called a friend to share how warm, welcoming and enjoyable all my interactions had been – it felt almost like I'd lived here my whole life. Growing up, I'd occasionally pass through New Rockford or play against the town in middle school sports, but I...

As recent as this summer, Patti visited with Myron about the stone pit restoration project in Sheyenne. An experienced stone mason, he was more than willing to share his expertise. Sheyenne offers condolences to Mary and the Jury family....

Taking home a state championship is something few kids ever get to experience. This past weekend, our boys of fall at New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock ended their football season in dramatic and dominant fashion, by shutting down the LaMoure/Litchville Marion Loboes and setting a state record for most points scored in a championship game. This season has been epic since the beginning, and this team was like none we've ever seen. I got to see it all from the sidelines, standing right in the midst...
Since the chaos of election season has ended, and we’ve stopped receiving daily text messages asking us to contribute a few dollars to our favorite candidate’s legal expense fund or celebrity endorsement financing plan, we can turn our attention to more important matters, like gravy. Seriously, though, I’ve read several articles recently warning that Americans should avoid discussing political topics during holiday gatherings in order to avoid conflict, hurt feelings and damaged sheetrock. The problem is that arguing is a cherished pasti...
“Liberty, justice and civilization depend on the rule of law” Presidential elections have consequences, as they say, and national airwaves are filled with voices engaging in speculation and prediction about the legislation, policies and actions that President-Elect Donald Trump will promote in his second term. Whatever Trump chooses to do, this much should be said about his presidency, as it should be said about any presidency. The nation’s chief executive has, by virtue of his Oath of Office, an obligation to preserve, protect and defend the C...
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In my personal Bible reading, apart from what is required for Sunday worship services, I’ve been reading Matthew lately. I normally concentrate on the letters of the Apostle Paul but decided to switch to one of the Gospels this time and chose Matthew. I have found that reading for content is much different than reading just a short bit of scripture looking for something on which to write a sermon. Matthew includes a lot of Jesus’ preaching in his book. The sermon on the mount covers an incredibly wide range...
