Volunteering is the ONE way to make a BIG investment in your community without spending a DIME. All you need is a little TIME. The value of that “little time” is more than you might think, too. Volunteers are worth on average $24.14 an hour according to an Independent Sector Study. When you think about it that way, if every resident in Eddy County volunteered for just one hour, the value of that time would be more than $55,000. That’s quite a boost for any rural economy. Add to that the impac...

We have one passion: helping students succeed. When you donate to New Rockford-Sheyenne Dollars for Scholars, you support our local students. As our local chapter celebrates 15 years of providing scholarships to NR-S High School graduates, we have set a goal to raise $5,000 through Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a Global day of giving. Each year the day follows the Tuesday after Black Friday and is a wonderful way to encourage donors to donate to non-profits rather than give a gift. This...
In the National Honor Society article on page A7 of the Nov. 25 issue, there was an error and an omission. Andrew Presnell was inducted, not Nicholas Presnell. Also, Alyssa Thumb was omitted from the list of inductees. She was not present for the ceremony and was therefore not pictured. We apologize for the errors....
What’s the best gift you ever received? Whatever it was, it surely wasn’t a material item bought in a store. An experience, rather than a material good, is the best gift to receive. That’s what University of Toronto professor Cindy Chan and University of California professor Cassie Mogilner discovered in a study they conducted in 2018. “The reason experiential gifts are more socially connecting is that they tend to be more emotionally evocative,” Chan told PsychCentral. “An experientia...
A political writer's annual Thanksgiving column can be easy to write, or incredibly difficult to put together. It can also be inspiring or banal. The two are probably connected. It's always a difficult one for me; its quality is a matter of your opinion. But hey, it's time to talk about being thankful. Please bear with. Yes, like you, I'm grateful for family, friends, neighbors, the absence of bankruptcy or prison time, yada, yada, yada. All in all it's been a good year for me, and I hope it's been a good one for you as well. On the political e...

Food. It’s part of the holiday tradition. Think soups, kuchens or oven-baked bread. Don’t forget the jams and sauces, pickles and relishes, chocolate truffles or tamales. Oh my. The list goes on in so many directions depending on your background or preferences. Unfortunately, not all of us are skilled or able to prepare such delicacies to grace the holiday table. So where would one find a gourmet jelly or a freshly prepared rhubarb-strawberry cheesecake? You’d probably start asking around. If you’re lucky, you’d be directed to the right per...

This Advent season I am struck by how many dreams and visions are part of the story leading up to Jesus’ birth. Take one of Joseph’s dreams for example: “An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20). Put yourself in Joseph’s shoes. It appeared that Mary had been unfaithful, that she had disgraced Joseph. What else could it be but unfaithfulness? She was pregnant and Joseph wasn’t the father. I...
