  • Living on Purpose: Time does not slow down for anyone

    Dr. Billy Holland|Dec 3, 2018

Growing older is like a train rolling down the track, and no matter how many botox injections, vitamins, or hair plugs, we cannot stop the reality of our mortality. There is nothing wrong with trying to look young and we agree that dieting and exercise would surely be a healthy and positive lifestyle but the hourglass only contains so much sand. As the days keep ticking away, we are reminded to not put off until tomorrow what we can do today because we are not sure how many tomorrows we will...

  • Sermonette- Dec. 3, 2018

Rev. Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church|Dec 3, 2018

“How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you?” — 1 Thessalonians 3:9 It seems that our society is becoming more and more individualistic. And, as a result, we often neglect the power of the faith of the larger body of Christ in the world to affect our lives. In this letter, Paul was writing to the Thessalonians in a time in which he himself was enduring considerable persecution and suffering (see 1 Thessalonians 3:4, 7). Timothy had just returned with a report that the Thess...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Dec. 3, 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 3, 2018

Every year at this time, I am amazed at the amounts of money raised for charities during this annual season of giving. I’ll admit that I’m a bit of a strange bird when it comes to these kinds of fundraisers. Growing up, the Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy certainly fostered my interest in fundraisers. Even so, I’m a little surprised that I never clicked on the announcement my college friend makes every year about the annual RDO Caters Taters for Charity. As a longtime employee of RD...

  • Hate is up; love is down. Sell!

    LLoyd Omdahl|Dec 3, 2018

Hate stock is going up If you have anything like a “personal relationships” portfolio, it’s time to dump the “love stock” and “buy hate.” Hate is on the way up. The FBI announced recently that reported hate crimes were up 17 percent last year. However many hates are not reported because it is difficult to know when hate becomes a crime. I am sure hate has driven many married couples to think of homicide, but only a few try it even though the hate is there. Americans have always had somebody...

  • The art of the deal

    Corey Seymour|Dec 3, 2018

There is a sad, almost poignant thing that happens when you present a series of actual facts and realities to the die-hard MAGA-forever Trump supporter. For those strong enough to accept the actual facts and realities, instead of merely waving them away with their magical hand while pronouncing them “fake news!,” there’s a fallback position many of them cling to. Okay, okay, they say: Yes, he lies all the time. Alright, so maybe he’s not that bright. And, yeah, I’m pretty sure he’s been up to...

Your vehicle might be a 4 wheel drive, front wheel or rear wheel drive. A...

  • Letter to the Editor: Not a fan of proposed changes to N.D. Higher Education governance

    Dec 3, 2018

Dear Editor: A lot of North Dakota residents were probably surprised, as I was, recently by the recommendation of Board of Higher Education ‘Task Force’ recommending a ‘new & improved’ method of governing the eleven institutions of higher education in our state! As Lloyd Omdahl constantly points out in his epistles, North Dakota has more boards and commissions than any other state in the union. As a classic case of a “solution in search of a problem”, our elected officials want to create three new boards and who knows how many sub-committ...

  • Dakota Datebook: Catherine Geiszler Vanourny

    Karen Horsley|Dec 3, 2018

Dec. 3, 2018 — On this date in 1909, Charles and Catherine Vanourny had been married only a day, but it’s unlikely they were honeymooning. They were, after all, frugal, hard-working Germans from Russia. A 31-year-old widower, Charles had homesteaded his 160-acre farm southeast of Ashley. His new 25-year-old bride, Catherine Geiszler, had the distinction of being the first girl born in McIntosh County. According to “Women of the Northern Plains” by Barbara Handy-Marchello, Catherine’s mother reared her “in the ordinary fashion of the prairie...
