  • Eyes that see the good in things: Dec. 09, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Dec 9, 2019

Hallmark movies— you either love ‘em or you hate ‘em. So, which camp are you in? I love them. My husband does not. He has grudgingly accepted my Christmas movies between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And I have finally admitted that, if it weren’t for him, I would probably be one of those people watching Christmas movies in July. He, of course, would tell you that I do watch Christmas movies in July. I guess he’s right. I do. I just try not to when he’s around. Hallmark’s 10th annual “Count...

  • Let the holiday cheer light up your December in North Dakota

    Dec 9, 2019

Lights are as much a part of the holiday season as “A Christmas Carol,” reindeer games, family meals, presents and Santa Claus. We wrap our houses and trees with them and on Christmas Eve, Santa even zeroes in on those lights to leave gifts. It’s a tradition with origins deeper than gift-giving and it involves cheering up long, dark winters in Scandinavia, to which many North Dakotans trace their heritage. Some cities there have extensive lighting that lasts months. These traditions continue throughout North Dakota at places such as Chmielewski...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Darkhouse spearfishing season details

    Doug Leier|Dec 9, 2019

I’m amazed at the raw pure connection to the outdoors enjoyed by many of my friends and co-workers. When the temperature drops and the ice begins to form, it doesn’t signal the end to spending time hunting and fishing. It’s just a transition. One of those transitions taking place now is the wait for darkhouse spearfishing. That season no longer has a specific opening date, so you can start spearing whenever you can find safe ice on which to set up a darkhouse. Some spearers got an early start...
