    Michael Achterling, North Dakota Monitor|Dec 9, 2024

Janne Myrdal, R-Edinburg, said she proposed removing the conflicts of interest section of the Senate rules because she worried about the "erosion" of the Legislature's authority and she believes the Ethics Commission is overstepping. "I think we write our own rules," Myrdal said. "I think we govern our own body." The new rules were created through consultation...

  • Lessons from a Christmas Tree

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 9, 2024

It's December 4, and I still don't have my Christmas tree at home decorated. A bare evergreen stands tall in the corner of the living room, staring at me. I'll get to it soon, I say. Traditionally, we'd decorate it on Thanksgiving weekend. It's something we've done with our kids since they were little. This year, nobody was really feeling it. My oldest had put up the tree in her apartment weeks ago, and my middle child spent hours decorating the display windows in the newspaper office last...

  • Lefse diplomacy: Using the power of food to bind families

    Debora Dragseth|Dec 9, 2024

With this holiday season following a hotly contested election, some Americans fear that political disagreements among family will boil over like a pot of poorly watched potatoes. In North Dakota, where the Plains meet the prairie and the spirit of the old country lives on, the secret to peace at the family table may be found in prioritizing lefse over politics. Norwegian immigrants began arriving in North Dakota in the 1870s. According to World Population Review, Norwegian Americans are predominantly concentrated in the Midwest, with North...

Along the campaign trail, Trump has reminded audiences of his threat to refuse military support for a NATO ally that he believes doesn’t pay enough to support the alliance, despite the promise in Article V of the treat...

  • Living on Purpose: December 9, 2024

    Billy Holland|Dec 9, 2024

Making the decision to live God’s way Many are convinced that this life has been given to them to do whatever they want, and technically it’s true that God has given every human a free will to choose. Most will agree this is one of the greatest gifts mankind has been given, but the problem is that our carnal human nature does not want what God wants. You see, the Lord desires to use us exceedingly abundantly above all we could ask or imagine, but the only way we can truly please Him is to do...

  • Sermonette: December 9, 2024

Deacon Bart Salazar, Diocese of Fargo|Dec 9, 2024

What is the good news? God loves you just because of who you are. He made you in His image and likeness. There is nothing you can do to make Him love you more or less. His love is unconditional. Let us just let that concept sink in. It is easy for us to simply dismiss this. It is easy for us to simply say, "I have heard that before. So what?" However, let us ponder for awhile the implications. When you are doing virtuous acts and displaying great works of charity and everyone is telling you what a good person you are, God loves you. When you...

  • Prairie Fare: December 9, 2024

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Dec 9, 2024

I slipped into my heavy coat as I ventured out into the first snowfall of the season. I also wore a long-sleeved shirt and a thick sweater. I probably looked like I gained five pounds in 10 minutes with all of this padding. I was ready to face the cold wind. If I were wearing a white scarf with my black coat, I'd look like a penguin. I relearned the "penguin shuffle" on the icy walk to my car. I didn't want to end up lying flat on the ice. Many people think they gain a fairly significant amount...

In a cross-classification battle between the Division A Cardinals and the Rockets in Division B, NR-S, with just 10 dressed players throughout the program this season, learned the meaning of pressure. The Cards' relentless man-to-man defense forced 23 total Rocket turnovers, and senior forward Edyn Hoornaert posted double figures in both points (19) and...
