On Saturday, Dec. 7, Santa Claus arrived in style. He and his daughter Holly came into New Rockford in a white horse-drawn carriage, driven by Dale Rosenberg and Michael Buck. Santa was in town for the annual Santa Day carnival sponsored by the New Rockford Area Chamber of Commerce and New Rockord Lions Club. He greeted 140 children at the Brown Memorial Auditorium during the two-hour event, which also featured fun carnival games and a store filled with prizes for the kiddos to...
On Saturday, Dec. 7, I volunteered during the annual Santa Day Celebration at the Brown Memorial in New Rockford. My job was to hand out a special gift to the children who came to see Santa. Santa arrived right on time, riding in a beautiful white horse-drawn carriage. He waved gleefully to the crowds that welcomed him. He was happy to see me and knew right away, I was there to help. He even complimented my elf ears! I have to confess: I haven't done much volunteer work in the past year. At the...
Librarians across the country are miffed, and it’s not because patrons are dog-earring the books again. This time librarians have turned their watchful eye to a certain publisher. Macmillan Publishing, one of the five-largest publishers in the United States, has placed restrictions limiting the number of newly released titles that libraries are able to purchase. Essentially, for each newly released e-book title, a library may purchase only a single e-book copy, and then must wait until the ninth week before purchasing additional copies, r...
Recent statistics from the Council on Foreign Relations, https://www.cfr.org/article/demographics-us-military, tell interesting facts about the United States armed services. Did you realize that military members make up approximately 0.5% of the population with women representing 20% of that calculation? Of the females serving our country, 18% are in the officer corps. Major Jaimie Laib, daughter of Jeannie Laib and graduate of the New Rockford Class of 2003, proudly falls into all three of...

During the holiday season, which now stretches from autumnal equinox to New Year’s Day, it’s nearly impossible to turn on the radio or walk through a shopping mall without hearing the rich, mellifluous voice of Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives. Few people can place his name but in the coming weeks millions will sing along or tap their toes to the improbable holiday hit he recorded in November 1964. Ives, who died in 1995, compiled a remarkably diverse showbiz resume. Yet, while memories of his not...
Maybe it’s because my first viewing of “Rudolph” occurred when I was four years old and my first viewing of “Frosty the Snowman” happened when I was a worldly wise nine-year-old, but I’ve always been extra cynical about Frosty. The animated TV special (based on a 1950 song introduced by Gene Autry) will doubtless garner oodles of affectionate attention when it turns 50 on Dec. 7, but it remains troubling on multiple levels. For starters, how did this goofy nobody rate designation as Frosty THE S...
Amazon is one of the largest companies in the world, boasting revenues of more than $230 billion last year. But last month the company sued the US Department of Defense over a paltry potential $10 billion spread over ten years. Amazon lost out to Microsoft in bidding for the Pentagon's Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (yes, JEDI, because the most important part of a government program is coming up with a cool acronym) cloud computing program. Amazon claims it lost the contract due to, well, JEDI mind tricks – "improper pressure" and "rep...
We could use a good snowstorm right about now. I love a good dusting of snow. I love how it disrupts our routines and throws everything out of whack. I lived in Washington, D.C., for nearly eight years. It delighted me how that city went into a panic every time forecasters predicted a few inches. Not only are school delays common there, but the federal government often announces delays, too. It sometimes shuts down entirely, giving federal employees paid snow days. Which is a delicious irony....

I have been considering five dreams in Matthew this Advent season. The third dream is another one of Joseph’s dreams: “Now after [the magi] had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him” (Matthew 2:13). And so an arduous 200-mile journey, fleeing in the middle of the night, filled with danger at every turn, begins with a dream. It seems that there is a contest happening...
On Nov. 21, 1902, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oglesby came up from Valley City; he was employed by the telephone company and was looking over telephone matters. Advance agent for the Sanford Dodge Company A.C. Godfrey was in town putting up bills for their upcoming performance. Mrs. John Olson and children left for a couple weeks in Minneapolis. Dick Bohmbach and Jack O’Keefe were in from western Eddy County. Miss Helen Oliver returned from McHenry. H.J. Mitchell of H. Peoples & Company left on an e...
Dear Savvy Senior, How do I go about appealing Medicare when they won’t pay for something that they covered in the past? Rejected Rhonda Dear Rhonda, If you disagree with a coverage or payment decision made by Medicare, you can appeal, and you’ll be happy to know that around half of all appeals are successful, so it’s definitely worth your time. But before going that route, talk with the doctor, hospital and Medicare to see if you can spot the problem and resubmit the claim. Some denials are c...
Ten-year-old Riley and her mother, Lynn Christensen, were huddled in front of the family computer one day, checking out models and prices of bikes. Christensen suggested to her daughter that they should pick one out for Riley’s dad’s birthday. Christensen scrolled down the home page of the Bike Rack, a shop in their town of St. Charles, Ill., and a video link for Project Mobility Hallmark Heroes caught her eye. She clicked on it out of curiosity. It’s a nine-minute video that is worth watch...
Flying Doctor by Merry Helm December 17, 2019 - Before helicopters were available, one UND-trained doctor used an airplane. James Mahoney, class of 1941, used his G.I. Bill to get his pilot's license, but he had to get his training early- at 6 a.m.. "If you are going to get a night call, it usually doesn't happen at sunrise, because they will usually wait until the office opens," he explained. Mahoney once had a woman go into premature labor during a blizzard. She lived on remote farm, and as soon as the weather cleared enough to fly, he went...
It was a very physical game overall. New Rockford-Sheyenne played a good game, as the locals defeated North Star by a final score of 64-51 in non-district girls basketball action, played here on Tuesday Dec. 11. It was the home opener for the Rockets. North Star could be one of the top teams in District 8. The locals led virtually all the way and at all quarter stops: 19-11, 41-28, 50-35. Again the Rockets came thru with a convincing 64-51 win. Nine Rockets got in to the game and eight scored. It was a total team effort by NR-S. Hannah Haley...
