In November, we brought you the story of the community effort to purchase and install stones for four individuals with unmarked graves, who are buried in the local cemetery. In little more than a week, the quest for $2,000 turned up nearly double the initial request. With more than $1700 over the initial request received, the Women's Auxiliary Cemetery Association (WACA) was the fortunate recipient of these funds. The check was deposited earlier this month. "I'm grateful that we live in a...

Christmas card trends are telling — they speak to the mood of the country — and this year’s trend offers some positive news. According to the Washington Post, hand-written “snail-mailed” Christmas cards are all the rage, particularly among millennials who, all of the sudden, are spending more on Christmas cards than baby boomers. We baby boomers came of age well before everything went digital. I still have and cherish the hilarious hand-written letters my friends and I shared during our colle...
Children all over the United States are currently wringing their iPhone-calloused hands over the possibility that Santa Claus might not make it this year because he's trapped in a delayed shipping container somewhere off the coast of California. The situation is a little different at my house. With three daughters in their mid-to-late teens, my wife and I are starting to wonder how much longer we should renew our private contractor partnership with Old Saint Nick. When the girls were younger...
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is my favorite Christmas movie. It takes me back to a simpler time I have never experienced, but love to revel in nonetheless, if even for a couple of hours. There’s something special, and timeless, about the way the characters treat each other and the way the community rallies to help a man through his most trying time. This film, that director Frank Capra didn’t consider a Christmas movie at the time, is now ranked #1 on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) list of the To...

Perfection! Painstaking perfection is how someone could describe how God asked for His Ark of the Covenant to be built. It would be here where He dwelt with His chosen people on earth. The children of Israel were told to bring their first fruits as materials for the Ark. Only incorruptible wood and the purest gold would be used to build it. The measurements would need to be exact and only the finest artisans and experts would be used to build it. "And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring "firstfruits...
Many times, I have thought about the inner lives of people who settled Eddy County. Did they curse the cold? Did they miss the friends and family they left behind? Did they burn a candle late into the night, or go to bed early, buried deep under the covers? Did they yearn for company, or perhaps sought out solace? We can never truly answer such questions, but there are artifacts within the museum that provide insight. Anton Youngberg traveled from Sweden to America in 1900. When he arrived at...
