  • Tommies defend home territory

    Nathan Price|Dec 20, 2021

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets varsity boys' basketball team opened their season with a heartbreaking 56-53 loss to the Thompson Tommies on Saturday, Dec. 11. The Rockets' star senior, Nick Berglund, opened up scoring with a towering hook shot on the game's first possession, just a taste of what was to come in the first half. Berglund scored 16 of the Rockets' 24 first-half points, and his presence under the basket kept NR-S in command of rebounds. As the end of the first-half approached,...

  • Cardinals conquer Rockets in Carrington

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 20, 2021

The varsity court experience deficit between the NR-S Rockets and Carrington Cardinals was fairly vast coming into the 2021-22 boys' basketball opening game. The Cards began their third season with largely the same roster, following records of 3-18 and 7-14 in the previous two campaigns, while the Rockets returned only two varsity contributors from last year's 15-8 team. However, it was a newcomer to the CHS roster, Josh Bickett, who made the most lasting impression in the 62-31 win for the...

  • Instant replay: Cardinals defeat Rockets in home gym

    Kyrie O'Connor|Dec 20, 2021

If you watched the match-up between the New Rockford-Sheyenne and Carrington boys basketball teams on Monday, Dec. 13, you would think that the Tuesday's girls' basketball game between the Rockets and Cardinals was an instant replay. Why is that you may ask? Both games were very high-paced, and both concluded with an average of a 28-point loss for the Rockets. With 5'11" senior center Sydnie Grager posted up under the basket, there was no chance in defeating the Cardinals. Grager scored in the...

  • A round of Santa-plause, please

    Dec 20, 2021

On Thursday, Dec. 9, the New Rockford-Sheyenne gymnasium was filled with high school musicians decked out in their ugly Christmas sweaters. The junior high and high school choirs sang many different Christmas carols, including 'Jolly Old Saint Nick!' and 'December Rose'. The gymnasium was festively decorated with poinsettias from Gina Clifton at the Flower Scent-R and greenery from the music department's annual fundraiser. During the annual Christmas concert, an ugly sweater contest is held....

  • Cards go 1-3 in home duals; take 4th at Al Larson tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 20, 2021

The CHS wrestling team had their struggles in the Carrington Duals on Friday night, December 10, the event traditionally preceding the Al Larson Invitational. The Cards dropped decisions of 31-24 to the Minot Magicians, 52-14 against Class B contender New Salem-Almont, and a tough 39-31 Region 2 loss to Pembina County North in the nightcap. In between, Carrington rolled to a 59-12 win against the out-manned Napoleon Imperials. The losses dropped the Cards' overall record in head-to-head outings...

  • Our Outdoors: In the Thick of It

    Nick Simonson|Dec 20, 2021

Give me an expanse of cattails in December, with a little snow on the ground and a lot of pheasants scattered throughout it, and that's about the best gift the outdoors can provide. Even in those years where I did not yet have a dog, I can recall serving as my own flushing machine, stomping over the three-toed tracks of pheasants weaving through a frozen slough. My buddies were often content to hug the edges, but I enjoyed the sweat-inducing, high-kneed tromp through the crackling reeds and,...

  • Bringing the Grassroots Effort Together

    Renee Tomala|Dec 20, 2021

Unbeknownst to many, Pheasants Forever (PF) operates under a unique local model that allows for an even bigger impact to be made for our wildlife and lands. That model puts our grassroots efforts on a pedestal, and by "grassroots" I am referring to our local chapters in small and large towns alike across the country, and not all in prime pheasant or quail territory, either. North Dakota is home to 25 chapters on the national roster that retain complete control over the funds they work hard to ra...
