The renderings show a vibrant new theatre that's reminiscent of its former look, and the floor plans show an improved layout with a modern interior. The theatre's rebuild has been among the top priorities for the community ever since the...

After a two-year wait, the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District finally has a new activity bus. As it became clear the district's old "Rocket Bus" was becoming increasingly unreliable and far too costly to continue repairing, the NR-S school board decided to purchase a new activity bus in October of 2022, at a cost of $197,700. Now, more than two years and several delays later, that vehicle arrived in New Rockford on Friday, Dec. 13. The bus is a 2025 Thomas HDX Saf-T-Liner, with a rear engine...

Christmas is on a Wednesday this year, folks. It’s a hump day holiday that has thrown me off completely. I was scratching my head this week trying to remember the last time we had Christmas smack dab in the middle of the week, and do you know why? Well, apparently it happened in 2019, the last Christmas before the COVID-19 pandemic changed our world. It feels like a lifetime ago, and in many ways that’s true. I publish two newspapers now, and one of them has to be sent to the printer 12 hou...
Biden and Trump have brought the presidential pardon power center stage Readers’ questions about the origins and scope of the presidential pardon power, triggered by President Joe Biden’s grant of a pardon to his son, Hunter, and the possibility he would issue blanket clemency – a preconviction pardon – to those whom President-elect Donald Trump has said should “go to jail,” coupled with Trump’s declaration that he will “most likely” pardon January 6, 2021 defendants, invite exploration of the most delicate, yet imperial, of the president’s con...
I promised Cecile Wehrman of the North Dakota Newspaper Association I would write opinions for the weekly newspapers that focused on opportunities rather than problems. I want to share "useful thinking" with readers who live in rural places. Some of that thinking comes from me, but much from others I have listened to, or read what they wrote. Former Ag Commissioner Roger Johnson is tired of me quoting people who had said important things. I understand I can be tiring to listeners and readers....

Where in your life are you going the wrong way? The Advent Season allows us to reflect on this question more consciously as we await the Redeemer of the World, Jesus Christ, on Christmas Day. A good place to start is to identify: Which of the Seven Deadly Sins are you struggling with the most at this point in your life? Is it pride, anger, gluttony, lust, envy, greed or sloth? By means of you being human, you are struggling with one or more of them. Where are you most in need of God's mercy? Recently, my wife and I watched the old 1980s movie,...
Things are not always the way they seem For many years I’ve had the privilege to visit those in jails, prisons, hospitals, recovery centers and nursing homes, as I truly enjoy spending time with all people. In nursing homes, I sing, teach Bible studies, and appreciate hearing about their former lives. The Lord has allowed me to make some precious friendships, and I want to share with you about a lovely lady who after a devastating stroke was no longer independent and is now in a comfortable s...

Beginning their season in New Rockford, the home team got off to a good start in...
For most of the game between New Rockford-Sheyenne and Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter on Thursday, Dec. 12, neither team was capable of shooting the basketball. The N/G-S Imperials didn't even score a point until well into the second quarter, and the Rockets were hardly shooting any better. As open looks for both teams missed their mark time-and-time-again, it felt as though both squads might fall short of scoring just 20 points on the night. However, that was before the fourth quarter got underway....
