The year had seen student protests worldwide, the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War, a chaotic Democratic National Convention, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. When I became Regional Administrator at the U.S. Small Business Administration, I never would have imagined the many positive experiences and challenges I’ve experienced during my visits across the Rocky Mountain region. Twelve months, six states, and nearly 10,000 miles later, I have taken the road less travelled and learned that the small business vitality of our local communities is getting stronger each day thanks to pro-growth economic policies that have been implemented over the past year. The small business climate has changed for the b...

It also comes with dangers. As our communities branch out and participate in the world economy, it is...

The holidays are known for the joy, laughter, and happiness which surrounds them. Between the Christmas lights, gift giving and receiving, and the Hallmark movies, it seems like the holidays should look like they do in the movies. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. This time can be stressful and very hard for some. It is not always a time of joy and happiness, but rather stress, despair and sadness. Thinking back on previous Christmas seasons, I am reminded of my family’s first Christmas here in New Rockford. I was in kindergarten, and...

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about seasonal affective disorder? I have always hated wintertime, but since I retired and am home a lot more, the dark and cold winter months make me depressed and lethargic. Dec. 24, 2018 — James Grassick started his career as a physician in Buxton in 1885. Among his many interests were Indian lore and archaeology— you might remember that he once owned the Highgate mastodon that now resides in the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck. He also enjoyed writing, and each year, he put together handsome booklets for his friends for Christmas. In one of these, he wrote of a special Christmas Eve he experienced back in the horse and buggy days. It was after nightfall when the good doctor was called to attend a wom...
Hunters and anglers may not realize how important they are to fisheries and wildlife management. While most of us understand the role that license fees, plus excise taxes on hunting and angling equipment, play in supporting fish and wildlife management programs, the information we provide about our time afield and on the water is also of great value to agencies like the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. And this time of year, as hunting seasons are ending, is prime time for the agency to...
