The Eddy County Sheriff's Department has welcomed a new deputy to their office. Tristin Peltier's first day on the job as an Eddy County Sheriff's Deputy was on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 – a fitting start to a new and important chapter for him and his family. Originally from St. John, N.D., Peltier graduated from the Law Enforcement Training Academy in Bismarck on Dec. 20, and previously worked for over two years as a corrections officer at the Rolette County Jail. But Peltier said much of his p...
The 69th N.D. Legislative Assembly will convene their 2025 regular session on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and they’ll be considering hundreds of bills as significant tax reforms appear to be on the horizon. North Dakota’s voters rejected a ballot measure earlier this year that would have eliminated valuation based property taxes in the state, but many legislators as well as Governor Armstrong believe there’s still an appetite for significant tax relief, particularly when it comes to property taxes. Gover...

After 125 years, the Eddy County Courthouse still stands proudly over New Rockford and Eddy County. Constructed in 1899, the historic building passed its 125th year of existence in 2024. And in November of 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. According to NRHP documents the building's architect was M. E. Beebe, and its contractor was M.J. Moran. All these years later, the courthouse they built still has the same historic appearance both inside and out. And as always,...
A prosecutor who was among the first to see the cracks in Hunter Hanson's North Dakota grain trading scheme says it's "ridiculous" that President Joe Biden has commuted Hanson's sentence on wire fraud and money laundering charges. "It's ridiculous," McLean County State's Attorney Ladd Erickson said. "It doesn't make any sense." Hanson, now 27, was a grain trader who authorities determined was running a Ponzi scheme and bilked more than 60 victims – primarily farmers and grain elevators – out...

The first third of the biennial 69th Legislative Assembly session convening Jan. 7 in Bismarck is likely to see property tax reform as the main challenge for legislators, according to leaders from across the political spectrum. Most don't expect the more than 50 anticipated property tax reform measures to engulf the proceedings, but the large number of bills expected will complicate matters during committee meetings, particularly for newer legislators just getting their feet wet. "We will...

In a few days we’ll begin 2025 – a year my 18-year-old self couldn’t fathom 25 years ago. We watched the clock tick down in the year 1999 with bated breath to see if the computer systems would go down and the world would end when everything shifted from the 1900s into 2000. No, I really wasn’t nervous about Y2K. After all, I was an 18-year-old kid spending her first New Year’s Eve as an independent college student who could stay up as late as she wanted. Spoiler alert: everything was fine and...
The U.S. Debt Clock says our country is in hock for more than $36 trillion. How massive is a trillion dollars? Consider this comparison from ThoughtCo – if you earn $45,000 a year, it would take you: • 22 years to amass $1 million dollars • 22 thousand years to amass $1 billion dollars • 22 million years to amass $1 trillion dollars Heck, I remember the good old days when a billion used to be a number so big nobody could comprehend it. President Reagan’s deficit spending brought a change to...
From Charles Dickens: advice for American fulfillment and reconciliation In this season of peace and joy and celebration, accentuated in many homes by the presence of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” whether on television or in print, comes useful advice for America’s progress in overcoming our deep political division and polarization, and fulfilling our yearning for a measure of civility and reconciliation, from my favorite English novelist’s lesser known book, “The Life and Times of Martin Chuzzlewit,” (1843), which Dickens once...

Where are you in your life during this Christmas Season? How do you feel? Where does it hurt? Many times, especially during important holidays like Christmas, instead of feeling joyful, we feel sad, alone and abandoned. We believe everyone else appears happy and question, why not me? People around us have had expectations for us that we simply did not meet. We have left them disappointed. They in turn have shut us out. We are not invited to participate in activities, events, friendship or life with others. This can take place in many ways....
Joy To The World, The Lord Has Come! The author of this story is unknown and it has been told by many people throughout the years. The gentleman to whom I'm going to introduce you was not a Scrooge, but a kind, generous man who loved his family and was upright in his dealings with other people. He could not understand how or why Jesus came to earth to save us from our sins. It did not make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. "I'm truly sorry to distress you," he told his wife,...
Dear Savvy Senior, Is there a rule of thumb on how long someone should keep their old financial paperwork? I have file cabinets full of old receipts, bank and brokerage statements, tax returns and more that I would like to toss. Recently Retired Dear Recently, It’s a great question. As we get older and our financial life gets more complicated, it’s difficult to know how long to keep old financial records and paperwork and when it’s safe to get rid of them. Some things you’ll need to hold on...
I recall when our son was very young. His childcare provider let me know her concerns with his eating. He did not like the lunches. He ate most of the food I cooked at home, but he was used to my style of cooking. I doubled down on all the usual recommendations for selective eaters. We maintained our patience and exposed him to a variety of foods. We paired the new foods with familiar foods, and we tried not to make food a power struggle. He became my kitchen and gardening helper. When he began...
All New Rockford businesses were closed from noon to 6 p.m. on July 3 and 5, 1907, and from 10 a.m. to the end of the day on July 4. On July 3 to 5, the Third Annual Race Meeting of the Central Circuit, sponsored by the Eddy County Fair Association, took place in New Rockford. Over 6000 people made their way to the racetrack over the three days. On the 3rd the weather was ideal; a small shower the night of the 4th just freshened things up; and the downpour in the very early morning of July 5...
The No. 6 New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets are emerging as serious contenders in Class B boys basketball. After winning back-to-back thrillers to start their 2024-25 season, the Rockets traveled north to Rugby where they took on this year's annual CNDC Tournament – an event NR-S hadn't claimed victory at since 2009. The tournament isn't limited to Class B schools, and multiple Class A teams also competed in Rugby with the expectation of claiming victory – but going up against larger schools did...
"Their future's so bright, they gotta wear shades," to quote a 1980s classic. A very talented group of Carrington wrestlers, many of whom made their mark in the Pitcrew youth program the last few years, showed their potential with a big-time effort at the 2024 North Dakota Middle School State Wrestling Tournament in Minot Saturday, Dec. 21. Of 11 registered competitors, nine advanced to the finals in their weight divisions, and seven took home championships. That all added up to 181 team...
