    Aug 19, 2019

Chicken Mystery August 22, 2019 — At the beginning of the summer in 1945, the secretary of the American Legion Post in Ashley asked the editor of the “Ashley Tribune” to report on what he and many others called a mystery: Some chickens had strayed from the chicken barn, and were lost. The paper really upped the advertising ante on these chickens. Every week or every other week, at least, something was announced about them. Certainly residents of Ashley followed the tongue-in-cheek calls for lost chickens with interest. The birds were some...

“Good Morning America” used to be one of my favorite shows, although I admit I probably haven’t watched in 20 years. Mostly because watching morning TV doesn’t work when you’re working. However, we recently disconnected our satellite television service and are streaming our television choices. We’ve found that some programs work better than others. As a result, I think I’ve found myself watching more TV than normal, trying new shows just to see if they work for us. So, that morning, I wa...

This, coupled with fierce determination, led his...

An article on the MSN webpage caught my eye the other day. It was a short blurb about a woman who had just finished working a long shift at their local hospital. Her son was starting his seventh week of Air Force basic training, and only had 17 days before his basic training would be finished. She said that when she is working the night shift, there is more time to think about things and she spent a lot of time thinking about her son that night. When she got off work, she pulled into a...

August 5, 2019 — In 1816, Congress passed a law that stated, “Licenses to trade with the Indians within the territorial limits of the United States shall not be granted to any but citizens of the United States unless by express direction of the President.” The law didn’t apply to the traders in the north and eastern sections of what is now North Dakota, because at that time, it belonged to Great Britain. Two years later, however, England signed a treaty with the United States that determined that all land south of the 49th parallel would n...

It was the third message I had received on the topic of mercy that day. Yes, it took three times before I finally, really paid attention. It works that way for me sometimes. Although I may have taken something of value from the first message and the second message, I stopped and really took notice at the third one. By the time the third message comes, it leaves me wondering if the message is for me. Or it could be that it just takes a sledgehammer to get my attention. In any case, that’s what h...

It was in 1916 that the Pioneer Oil and Gas Company began drilling the state’s first wildcat well southeast of Williston. It turned up dry, but that didn’t stop the many attempts that followed it. All told, it took 45 years for dry holes to turn into gushers. The Amerada Petroleum Corporation finally discovered oil near Tioga in April 1951. The w...
