  • Eyes that see the good in things- Begin a tradition of giving

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 10, 2019

This week I met a very nice man. I had heard about John Scanson several times as, one by one, parts of his story kept popping up on Facebook. As was mentioned in the front page article, the Transcript covered a story last year when he built 24 handmade birdhouses and gave them to the students in Mrs. Hager’s class at NR-S. Some time later, a friend posted a picture of her granddaughter’s smiling face, along with other Kensal elementary students who had just received handmade doll beds from him...

  • What it takes: Graphic designer says "Art is all around us"

    Oakley Brazil|Jun 3, 2019

Over the weekend I was enjoying some Hershey's Kisses and noticed something very interesting. In the space between the K and the I, there was a kiss shape. When I showed my mom, she was surprised to see it and even more surprised that I noticed such a tiny detail. Graphic artists were the ones responsible for that creative design. It turns out, I actually know a graphic designer and decided to learn what it takes to work in that field. Ashley Schuster has worked at the New Rockford Transcript...

    Jun 3, 2019

Insanity Plea by Merry Helm June 4, 2019 — A prisoner of the Jamestown State Hospital made a surprising statement on this day in 1936. Charles Marratto, the convicted murderer of Fargo grocer Peter Stewart, confessed to feigning insanity in hopes of a transfer from the penitentiary at Bismarck to the institution in Jamestown. The convict believed that an escape from the hospital would be easier than from the prison, but was upset to discover that the hospital personnel watched him even more closely than the prison guards. Marratto made his conf...

After teaching, I’ve been working for a small company where I do pay Social Security taxes. Now, approaching age 65, I would like to retire and apply for my Social Security benefits. But I’ve been told that my teacher’s pension may cause me to lose some of my Social Security. Is that true? Ready to Retire Dear Ready, Yes, it’s true. It’s very likely th...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: What it means to "reboot"

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 3, 2019

Although I am not a computer expert, I have come a long way since the days when I was certain the push of a button would forever render my computer useless. I also remember those first calls to tech support when, invariably, their first question was to ask if I had rebooted the computer. I must confess that on that first call, I had no idea what the technician meant. So, naturally, I hadn’t rebooted and was a little embarrassed when that was all it took to solve that problem. The dictionary d...

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|May 27, 2019

The June 6, 1902, “New Rockford Transcript” offered an opinion on the Minnewaukan baseball team. On May 30, New Rockford had played “the gentlemanly Carrington team,” but on June 3 they played in Minnewaukan against a team that exhibited “rottenness and ‘baby play.’” Most of the team from up north were a bunch of “bluffing, blatting hoodlums” who didn’t know how to play clean baseball. “Prune out your low-lived, dirty ball players, Minnewaukan” because they’re just “rag-chewing scalawags…” In...

Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some good tools and tips for senior gardeners? My 77-year-old mother loves to work in the garden but over the past few years has been plagued by injuries. Concerned Daughter Dear Concerned, Aches, pains and injuries are not uncommon among older gardeners. Because gardening is such a physical activity that often requires a lot of bending and stooping, squatting and kneeling, gripping and lifting, it can be extremely taxing on an aging body. Back pain and knee...

  • Dakota Datebook: Belhammer saves child

    Merry Helm|May 27, 2019

May 31, 2019 — Gordon Keeney was aboard the steamboat Dakota when he witnessed a dramatic rescue attempt by a burly German immigrant. Seventy-six years later, Keeney’s written account was published in the Fargo Forum. In 1874, the Dakota was steaming north down the Red River with a maximum load of 175 Canadian, Scotch, British and Irish passengers. Because of the crowded conditions below, Keeney wrapped himself in his buffalo robe and spent his time in the open air of the hurricane deck. Sprawled on that deck, forward of the stern, were bet...

  • Life lessons we can learn from the trees

    Rachel Brazil|May 27, 2019

Editor’s note: This article was submitted on behalf of Eddy County Community Cares, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to creating awareness about mental health issues. When I was young, I spent many hours with my friends the trees. I collected seed pods from maples and sycamores, desegmenting them as if I might find the secrets of the universe they held within. I collected the leaves from birches, sweet gums and poplars, pressing them in contact paper to make colorful collages. I would climb high in the branches, barefoot and ready to t...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: A new perspective on Memorial Day

    Allison Lindgren|May 27, 2019

Memorial Day has taken on a new perspective for me this year, mostly due to articles that I have been reading in the news. While I’ve thought about Memorial Day, researched it and written about it; it’s always been from the perspective of an American who is grateful to our military. This story is written from the perspective of a foreign family grateful to our military. The story by Robin Wallace is a story of courage and inspiration for Memorial Day. Wallace says that even worse, it has been tu...
