  • Dakota Datebook: Rodeo in Sanish

    Merry Helm|Jul 1, 2019

July 4, 2019 — When the waters of Lake Sakakawea are down, the former townsite of Sanish sometimes resurfaces. Back in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, Sanish was the place to be for rodeo fans. A group of enthusiasts held a meeting at the Sanish Fire Hall in April 1947, and their brainchild – the Sanish Rodeo – quickly took shape. By July 3, the newly formed association had constructed a covered grandstand, corrals and chutes. The three-day premiere of the Sanish Rodeo was a hit, with around 8,000 people flocking to the rodeo grounds to watch...

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 1, 2019

What is your traditional Fourth of July celebration like? Getting together with family is my favorite tradition. Often we visit my husband’s hometown to celebrate with family. It is a small town that prides itself for its July 4 celebrations and the city rarely disappoints with their planned events, and of course, fireworks. The firemen put on a show and people set off their amateur fireworks for about a week prior and following the Fourth of July. This holiday comes with its own set of u...

  • Our national debt is out of control, but nobody seems to care

    Tom Purcell|Jun 24, 2019

Breaking news: Federal spending is out of control. I'm kidding, of course. Spending, deficits and debt have been out of control for years. It's just that last week we broke yet another record. For the first time in our nation's history, federal spending topped $3 trillion in a fiscal year's first eight months, according to last week's Monthly Treasury Statement. How much is $3 trillion? According to Kiplinger, $3 trillion would pay the salaries of every member of the U.S. Congress for the next...

  • Dakota Datebook: Digging up Bones

    Tess Sandstrom|Jun 24, 2019

June 25, 2019 — “Digging up bones, I’m digging up bones. I’m exhuming things that are better left alone.” These are lyrics from one of Randy Travis’ hit songs about heartache and lost love. Of course, this song wasn’t out on this day in 1915, but had it been, it just might have been on the lips of Leo Verhulehn as he literally dug up bones. Verhulehn had bought property between Niagara and Shawnee and was digging a cellar on this day, June 25, 1915, when he uncovered six skeletons covered by six feet of earth. Five of the skeletons app...

He has since written much on the topic, and become an expert in the Alzheimer’s community. For DeMarco, things were most difficult at the beginning when he acclimated to his mother’s new reality. He says his mother “turned meaner than a...

These windows have become a favorite place to watch birds and wildlife over the years. However, on this particular morning, I was planning for an upcoming visit from my husband’s family when I heard the f...

  • Opinion: Breaking news! Legitimate political discourse is dead

    Rich Manieri|Jun 10, 2019

"This just in," as we say in the news business. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher recently called Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden to complain about President Donald Trump. This is indeed big news, mainly because Thatcher has been dead for six years. But, if the former vice president says he spoke to Thatcher, who am I to question? Biden later corrected himself and said he was talking about current Prime Minister Theresa May, who is very much alive. Biden called the mistake a "Freudian slip," which is also kind of a strange th...

Some time later, a friend posted a picture of her granddaughter’s smiling face, along with other Kensal elementary students who had just received handmade doll beds from him...

  • What it takes: Graphic designer says "Art is all around us"

    Oakley Brazil|Jun 3, 2019

Over the weekend I was enjoying some Hershey's Kisses and noticed something very interesting. In the space between the K and the I, there was a kiss shape. When I showed my mom, she was surprised to see it and even more surprised that I noticed such a tiny detail. Graphic artists were the ones responsible for that creative design. It turns out, I actually know a graphic designer and decided to learn what it takes to work in that field. Ashley Schuster has worked at the New Rockford Transcript...
