Oct. 9, 2018 — On a cold winter night in 1910, a 600-pound meteorite lying on a sidewalk in Carrington disappeared and was never seen again. Thousands of meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere every single day, but only a few survive to actually hit the dirt. On this date in 1992, for example, thousands of people heard a sonic boom, then watched as a meteor burst into flames and streaked across eastern skies. As the meteor hurtled toward New York, more than a dozen people captured it on film. Before falling into Peekskill, 50 miles north of New Yor...

Her Facebook posts are always interesting, with pictures of new and interesting “roads less traveled” types of places. Not long ago, she posted pictures of a mama bear with cubs just across t...

Oct. 3, 2018 — The American Crystal Sugar Company began operating North Dakota’s first refinery – located near Drayton – on this date in 1965. Farmers in the Red River Valley experimented with sugar beets as far back as the 1870s, but without a processing plant nearby, beets proved a poor venture. Valley farmers gave sugar beets another try during the agricultural depression following World War I. In 1918, valley sugar beets were sent to a small factory in southern Minn., where the crop proved superior to most. Production increased, and peo...
I learned a few things the other night when I took my husband to the Emergency Room again. The first thing I experienced was that familiar sense of relief, when we knew the medical professionals were now in control. The second thing I learned was that Google really isn’t all that helpful in self-diagnosis, and that it can make things much scarier than they really are. The third was that I really do need to stop trying to eavesdrop on conversations that are not intended for me, especially when I...

September 18, 2018- When the Northern Pacific Railroad asked Jay Cooke’s banking company to be its financial agent in 1865, Cooke was leery of the offer. Northern Pacific needed help in funding construction and selling bonds, but this was a large undertaking, even for the Jay Cooke and Company, a firm that had financed the Union in the Civil War. The railroad was to be the largest enterprise in the country up to that time–larger even than the Erie Canal. Cooke declined the request, but when asked again in 1869, he had grown more optimistic of...
Colorado is one of my favorite places to go. First of all, it’s my birthplace, but until six years ago, I had never been there. It had always been on my list of things to do. My parents planned a family vacation to go to Colorado and show me the place where I was born. Unfortunately, a comic scene of unfortunate events kept it from happening. I wonder if my parents still see any comedy in those events? My siblings and I were discussing that trip and compared it to one of the Chevy Chase v...
