It seems that spring is finally giving way to summer. I enjoyed the spring flowers like I always do. The flowering crabapple trees are always amazing to me. The short-lived lilacs have always been my favorites. The early blossoming flowers and fruit trees have faded now though, and I am happy to say that I still have lilacs on a couple of my new lilac bushes. They started flowering early and they are still going strong. I hope that’s a sign of things to come. I would love to have lilacs that l...

In his book, “Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln,” he wrote that the president’s hat was always dented and messed up. One evening he learned why. Lincoln was busy with some papers and didn’t see the salute until the last second. “He threw up...

The wind was playing havoc with the electricity at my house last Friday. I was watching television and checking Facebook (multi-tasking two mindless chores) when the lights flickered on and off repeatedly. I finally gave up and unplugged the television and computers before getting ready to go run errands. Just in time, too. The power went off (and stayed off) just as I got done drying my hair. In retrospect, I guess I’d have to say it was a good thing I got a little push to get moving that morning because I didn’t expect that one of them would...

When I read this story, it reminded me of a young me, listening to my great-grandma tell stories about the young son who lost his life while serving his country. She would share something she about him and then, with her smile becoming a twinkle in her eyes, she would reach out and touch my little brother’s dimples. The dimples that would flash whenever he smiled and the same dimples she had seen when s...

I remember hearing a speech a while ago that made me think. The speaker asked if people view you as a safe person to talk to. Then, she said that with the number of people who are affected by this current opioid crisis, if you don’t know someone affected by it personally, you may want to look within yourself to see if you are someone that your friends and family feel safe sharing their struggles with. Because we all probably do. Then a book I recently underscores that message. In her book, S...
