Edith Lillian Delores Schmit of Carrington, N.D. died on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the age of 88. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, March 9, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Carrington. Burial will be at Carrington Cemetery in the spring. Father Dodge Officiated and special music was provided by the Sacred Heart Choir. Casket bearers were Ryan Waagen, Domonic Schmit, Benjamin Schmit, David Schmit, Roy Biel, Adam Schmit and Bill Woulu. Honorary bearers were all of Edith's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edith was born to Carl and Bertha (Binns) Thornton on February 17, 1930, near Grace City, N.D. She attended school through the 8th grade in Bordulac, N.D.
On June 9, 1947, Edith was united in marriage to the love of her life Stephen Schmit. They had ten children together.
Edith served as a local 4-H leader, as an honorary judge at the Foster County Fair, and on the Altar Society. Edith was a long-serving member of the Bordulac Church until its closure, at which time, she became a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Edith is survived by children: Stephen Schmit Jr., Annbell (Bob) Bruce, Mary Waagen, Colleen (Richard) Biel, Timothy (Faye) Schmit, Leonard Schmit, Joanna Slag, Bertha Bell, Elizabeth Schmit and Joseph (Kelly) Schmit; 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one sister Evelyn Wilder and many nieces and nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband; brothers: Earl, Frances, Harry, Harold, John, Stanley, William, Gerald, Darrell, Wesley and two infant brothers; sisters Hazel, Thelma and Gertrude, and one grandson, Michael Slag.
