Carl Aaland, 96, of Carrington, N.D., died Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington. Burial and a graveside service will be in the spring.
Carl Johan Aaland was born on Aug. 27, 1921, in New Rockford, N.D., the son of Knut and Jennie (Hjelseth) Aaland. He attended country school until the 8th grade. Carl started farming after the 8th grade on the family farm until July 15, 1942, when he joined the U.S. Army. He was medically discharged due to wounds on July 26, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Normandy Company, EAME Ribbon with one Bronze Star for his bravery and service.
Carl met the love of his life Delores Luttschwager in Colorado. They were united in marriage on Jan. 2, 1945, in Sheyenne, N.D. Together they had two children Kaylyn and Jennifer. They farmed for 14 years in the Barlow area before he took a job as a school custodian for three and half years. He then worked at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, N.D., for 43 years, all the while farming the family land.
Carl was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). He was also a member of the Federated Church in Carrington.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years; his daughter Jennifer Arnold; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild on the way and one sister Genevieve Klein, Fargo.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Kaylyn Schremser and three brothers; Norman, Arnold and John.
