Dakota Recreation Report: April 2, 2018

Outdoor notes:

*Ice is never completely safe. Avoid areas with vegetation, moving water, pressure ridges and springs. Check conditions as you go along on the ice.

*April 6: Prairie Pothole Ducks Unlimited banquet, Woodworth Fire Hall, 5:30 p.m.

*April 9: N.D. Game & Fish Dept. public advisory meeting, New Rockford Eagles, 7 p.m.

*April 10: Central Dakota Rocky Mtn. Elk Foundation, Jamestown.

Fishing:

*Devils Lake elevation, March 27: 1,499.69 feet above mean sea level (MSL).

*Stump Lake elevation: 1,449.63 MSL.

*Lake Sakakawea elevation: 1,837.85 MSL; 22,000 cubic feet per second average (CFS) Garrison Dam daily releases.

*N.D. Game & Fish Dept. Dist. game wardens: Devils Lake producing occasional walleye with some nice-sized pike. Try the west end. No reports from east-central area lakes. Watch for slush along shorelines on area lakes but ice conditions should still be okay. No new Missouri River System reports, but watch shorelines with slushy, muddy conditions.

*Devils Lake, Ed’s Bait Shop, Devils Lake: Move around and drill a lot of holes for walleye and perch with a fair amount of anglers still out on Devils Lake.

*Devils Lake, Lakeview Lodge, Minnewaukan: Success remains slow throughout most of Devils Lake with lots of snow on the ice.

*Devils Lake, Woodland Resort, Devils Lake: More snow on Devils Lake, so be prepared in the event of becoming stuck. Fewer anglers on the ice with continued tough success even though they continue marking fish.

*Foster County area lakes, Dry Dock, Carrington: Activity remains light on area lakes.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Area lakes generally quiet, including Jamestown Reservoir. A few anglers still heading to Woodworth area lakes, though, with a little success. Look for some river activity.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Not many reports from area lakes. The few anglers out are heading to Jamestown Reservoir for crappie.

*Lake Ashtabula, Bayshore, Valley City: Little activity with difficult access onto the lake.

*Lake Sakakawea, Cenex Bait & Tackle, Garrison: Some pike activity from Douglas and Garrison bays and Wolf Creek on Lake Sakakawea. Shorelines are slushy but ice is okay yet. Lake Audubon quiet.

*Lake Sakakawea/Lake Audubon/Missouri River, Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City: Missouri River producing spotty walleye success down river. Look for improving success from both boat and shore with stable, warmer weather. Some pike success on Wolf Creek of Lake Sakakawea.

*Lonetree WMA area lakes, Harvey: Little activity.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Little activity.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: No new reports.

*Spiritwood Lake, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Not much activity.

*Spiritwood Lake, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: No reports.

Hunting:

*Spring turkey hunters should start scouting now even with the late spring weather.

Migration:

*Light geese: Some early reports of snow geese around Tewaukon Nat’l. Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in southeast N.D. and Sand Lake NWR in northeast S.D.
