Spring weather will be here soon (or maybe not) and dogs will be spending more time outdoors. Several things come to mind after hearing of a scary incident where a big German Shepherd running loose jumped up and bit a small dog being carried by its owner.

REMINDER 1) City law requires pets be leashed or kenneled when outside. 2) Being near the edge of town is not being in the country. 3) These laws are to protect the public, others property and ensure the safety and well-being of the pet.

Our Police have way more to do than play dogcatcher. Most times when called, they are on patrol elsewhere and by the time they stop doing more important duties to answer a loose dog complaint, the dog is long gone or hiding in brush somewhere. Loose dogs just by their presence can scare small children and the elderly, even if not a threat. Too many times I've had my peaceful morning walks spoiled by a barking, snarling dog on the sidewalk. I've had loose dogs inside the chicken fence and horse corral. Several years back, one chased and harassed a pregnant mare until it slipped and fell. There are many horse riders, and I have had dogs run up and scare my team on buggy and sleigh rides. I don't have a dog, so it's especially maddening when I step in the doo-doo and the grandkids come in from our yard with it on their shoes. Protect your pet. Obey pet ordinances.
