NR-S music students excel at regional contest

New Rockford-Sheyenne (NR-S) students traveled to Valley City on Thursday, April 12 for the Region 5 solo and ensemble music contest and returned with many state qualifiers (SQ).

The SQ participants for solo and ensemble contest include Makayla Biel, Nick Hovey, Pieter Louters, Micah Nicolai, Garret Schuster and Kayden Wiedrich. Biel delivered Alessandro Scarlatti's "Gial sole dal Gange." Hovey's vocal solo, "Pur dicesti o bocca bella" was an early Italian aria written by Antonio Lotti. Louters received an Outstanding Performance for Franz Schubert's "Halt!" which allowed audience to witness one of the earliest extended song cycles. Nicolai performed the early Italian aria titled "O del mio dolce ardor" by Christoph Willibald Gluck. Schuster performed "Down among the Dead Men" an anonymously penned pub song of the 18th century. Wiedrich performed the aria from Antonio Caldara's 18th century opera titled "Sebben Crudele."

The SQ duets included Allmaras, Hovey, Hartl, Justyne Klocke, Louters, Nicolai and Wiedrich. Allmaras and Louters performed 17th century's Giovanni Legrenzi's "Fierezza si vaga." Louters and Nicolai delivered Anotnio Vivaldi's "Laudamus Te" from "Gloria." The duet of Hartl and Hovey were recognized for and Outstanding Performance of "Pie Jesu," written by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Wiedrich and Klocke sang "The Snow Begins to Fall" by Andy Beck.

Other vocals included the men's quartet, which consisted of Gaius Arroyo, Hartl, Hovey and Nicolai in their performance of Houston Bright's "I Hear a Voice a-praying." Arroyo, Hartl, Hovey and Nicolai added Louters, which made for a men's quintet performance of Pepper Choplin's "Walk a Mile." The men's quintet grew by a few more still as Teddy Allmaras, Chris Becker, Xavier Klocke and Chris Becker for the men's ensemble performance of Eric Whitacre's "Lux Aurumque."

The SQ participants for solo instrumental performances include Joey Gray, Hartl, Cassidy Holth and Logan Munson. Gray played "If with All your Hearts" by Felix Mendelssohn on the trombone. Hartl preformed Antonia Capuzzi's "Andante and Rondo" on tuba. Holth performed on the flute, the concerto-suit "Suite in A minor" by Georg Philipp Telemann. Munson played the classical piece "Allegro" by Wolfgang Mozart on saxophone.

The SQ participants for instrumental duets included Holth, Sandra Larson, Klara Marxen, Liz Widmer and Wiedrich." Holth and Widmer paired a flute and clarinet for a duet performance of "Roving Minstrels" by Forrest Buchtel. Holth and Wiedrich performed Floyd O. Harris's duet "Two Marionettes" on the flute. Hartl and Larson paired together for a tuba and cornet duet of Franz Joseph Haydn's "Allegro Scherzando." Marxen and Widmer performed a clarinet duet of Mozart's "Minuet and Trio."

Other performers in the instrumental category included Heinz, Munson, Schuster and Roscoe's saxophone quartet. They received an Outstanding Performance for their performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Prelude and Fugue." Arroyo, Chloe Guthmiller, Miranda Johnson, Louters, Klocke, Nicolai performed Nathan Daughtery's "Topsy Turvy" in their percussion ensemble.

The women's ensemble consisting of Ashlynn Benson, Gretchen Berglund, Biel, Cassidy Clifton, Jaden Gray, Kyleigh Hilbert, Kindra Jacobson, Carli Lies, Ashley Schuster and Marxen performed "Will the Circle be Unbroken" by J. David Moore.

An additional women's ensemble comprised of Benson, Biel, Dani Bjerke, Jaden Gray, Jacobson, Justyne Klocke, Heinz, Cassie Longnecker, Katelyn McDowell, Kenna Munson and Wiedrich performed "Slumber my Darling" by Mark Hayes.

Mixed ensembles included Allmaras, Berglund, Clifton, Hilbert, Xavier Klocke, Lies, Louters, Marxen and Ashley Schuster performing "Dominus Vobiscum" by Jacob Narverud.

Allmaras, Arroyo, Hartl, Hovey, Johnson, Nicolai, Azja Fortney, Abby Makay, Roscoe, Jacobson, Justyne Klocke and Ashley Schuster received an Outstanding Performance for "Ave Verum Corpus" by William Byrd.

Berglund, Hilbert, Hovey, Johnson, Lies, Louters, Nicolai, Marxen, Shayla Thumb, Roscoe and Nicole Wiley performed "All ye Who Music Love" by Baldassare Donato.

Arroya, Fortney, Lois Gibson, Johnson, Makay, Marxen, Roscoe, Thumb and Willey and performed "Song of the Earth" by Chor von Marti Lunn Lantz.
