He is for you
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose…. What, then shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:28 & 31
This is probably one of my favorite verses in the Bible. It is so assuring to know that God will work all things out in our life for good. In addition, we know that God is not against us, but rather he is for us. All too often, when life happens, we tend to think that God is “pulling the rug right out from underneath us.” In short, God is not into practical jokes that make life harder for you and me. What he is into is redeeming what is broken and taking the pieces of our life and putting them back together.
We know that in this life there are going to be moments when it appears that things are literally falling apart. Bad things tend to happen and there will be moments we will not understand—that should be no surprise to us. It is in that moment, God uses what has happened and brings forth something good in our life. He does not say what happened to us is “good,” but rather he works for our good. Cancer is not good. Losing a family member is not good. Disease is not good. None of these things are good, but God is working in ways we do not see for our good and for his glory.
This is the assurance that we can have and need to embrace. What we think about God in the face of pain matters. Do we really believe that God is working in our life for good? Do we really believe in this moment of uncertainty that God is for us and not against us? If God is for us, than nothing or no one can be against us!
