Mustangs defeat SNR Black Sox in baseball season opener

Spring has sprung! The Sheyenne New Rockford (SNR) Black Sox began the 2018 high school baseball season Monday, April 23 at Tolna.  

The Black Sox are a young team, but most of the players have years of playing experience. SNR should be very competitive in Region 3. Carrington and Midkota-Dakota Prairie-Lakota will likely be the teams to beat in Region 3, and both are very well coached. Medina-Pingree-Buchanan and Kidder County are the other Region 3 teams.

Elliott Belquist is now in his 13th season as Head Coach for SNR. He is assisted by Jon Johnson and Chris Bittmann.

In the varsity game, Midkota-Dakota Prairie-Lakota scored three runs in the first inning. One scored on a pitcher's balk and two more scored on an error. The Mustangs added one more in the second.

The locals plated three runs in the fifth, as nine batters came to the plate. Hunter Thompson drew a leadoff walk. Luke Ystaas reached second base on an error. Johnny Grann singled to right with one out.

Thompson and Ystaas both scored. Nathan Holzwarth came up next and reached second base on an error, and Grann scored.

Midkota-Dakota Prairie came up one more run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Mustangs defeated the Black Sox by a final score of 7-3.

Teddy Allmaras and Cole Varnson each pitched well overall for their teams. SNR is now 0-1 in Region 3 and 0-1 overall.
